This thread is worthless without a discussion about baiting.

baiting??? Oh boy. If they pass that, the next thing you know, deer dogs will get CWD or something from the corn which will inadvertently increase night hunting, especially in high fences.

Could you imagine how it would affect the population if 2dogs goes down there for 10 days?

And if the deer will stop crossing County lines when they rut or will the same deer be "safe" because he followed a doe across that imaginary line? I can see the Gubments solution now to install 2 faced sign on posts every 50 yards along the County line with "No rutting until Fedruary 1st" on one side and "No rutting after January 31st" on the other side. Of course it would have to be written in whitetail language so the deer will know which county they can rut in and when!!!!!!

I couldn't agree more! I thought things were fine the way they were.

You couldn't pay me to drive down there for a Febuary hunt. I'm burnt out and ready for it to be over by the end of Jan.

Shooting does and bucks during this time sounds like trouble for the population in a few years. You could be killing more pregnant does. I know that the same argument could be made for those killed during the regualr season now. If you are killing them in Feb wouldnt your odds be higher for shooting a pregnant doe then instead of Decemeber or January? If you cannot kill a doe before February...what the crap is wrong with you?

Make it a buck only gig. That is what a "rut" hunter is looking for really right? That seems to be the argument around here. "We dont get to shoot rutting bucks because our rut is later than your in__________ Alabama."

I agree. I'm in Monroe and our rut is just starting, however I know that some doe's are earlier than other and the chance of killing a pregnant doe increases. I personally am not going to shoot a doe during the rut, and then again, I may not be included in the extended period. But I do think that it is needed. I am aware that most of the state experiences the pre rut, rut, and post rut, but those in the south not so much. Some don't get to experience it at all.

Unless they open up turkey season down there around March 1st, ya'll damn sure don't have to worry about me running down there and running up lease prices. I hope it passes for the sake of those who would benefit! thumbup

It really doesn't matter if you kill does before or during the rut. Just about every alive doe in the woods will be bred at some point during the rut, so you're either killing an already pregnant doe DURING the rut, or a potentially pregnant doe BEFORE the rut.

The effect on deer numbers for next year is pretty even either way, I'd say.

We cut off doe shooting after December 31, but that's just to let the woods settle for the rut...has nothing to do with numbers for next year.

I made this argument to my group and you would have thought I had just asked them to solve a complicated riddle of some sort. It's either a future pregnant doe or a currently pregnant doe, what does it matter? What we really do is try not to kill does on the plots b/c we don't want to possibly run them off of them, so that when the bucks are cruising good, there's a better chance of them visiting the plots b/c of the does being there.

You obviously don't hunt in Cleburne County. That is pre-rut to rut time there. I doubt hunters there would be ok with it.

If they're going to extend the season to give hunters in those areas a chance to hunt rutting bucks, that's fine. But why complicate matters by trying to find ten days of the regualr season, to shut down? All that means is that they're trying to avoid hunters from any unaffected portions of the state complaining about someone else getting more time to hunt than them. If the rut is later down there, then I suppose that they could delay the beginning fo the season in those particular counties, but shutting it down in December seems like creating more of a problem than solvong one.
So, some hunter's going to whine and moan that "It's not fair. They get to hunt more than I do!" Really?! Sure they are! And they ought to be ashamed. Grown adults, pouting with their lip out. I don't hunt down that way. But I don't care if they get an additional ten days of gun season that I don't get. I know there are many valid asrguments on both sides of this situation, but DAMN. I hate that grown ups can act like children when they don't get their way or they worry about what someone else has got that they don't, cause they're worried about everything being fair.
Fair is NOT equal. Fair is getting what you need.
Rant over. Have a great weekend!
