So me and my son Collin, 7 years old, went to the woods this afternoon trying to get him a good buck. At about 4:40 a single doe stepped out and started feeding. We watched her for a good while with Collin sitting in my lap and me whispering to him. Teaching him about her body language and actions. She started looking back in the woods and I told him a buck may be coming. Sure enough, after watching her for 30 minutes or so, a deer stepped out. I could tell it was a buck but didn't know how big. I looked at him through the scope and knew it'd be a great deer for Collin. He asked how many points it had to which I told him I didn't know and he should just concentrate on shooting the deer. Well, like any hunter at some point, he made the mistake of looking at the rack and got a bad case of buck fever. Bless his little heart. He was shaking so bad and going, "ohhhhhh ohhhhhh". I tried to calm him down but just couldn't. He got a little upset that he couldn't finish the job but I assured him it was okay. He asked me to shoot the buck. I tried to tell him "no" but he just insisted because he was so disappointed in himself. I shot the buck which turned out to be a nice 9 pointer. I've killed bigger but this deer will have a lot of special places in mine and Collin's memories. We're going to do a European mount on him and hang it in Collin's room, at his request. Gentlemen, THAT is what hunting is all about.

Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

He swung by the house with the deer and Collin was all over it lifting the head and all like he did it all by himself. It was great!!

Some day I hope to have my son let me shoot a deer when I am with him. He hogs them all.
