I had a piece of property behind a subdivision a while back and got a call from an asst. D.a. that he knew I had shot his black lab the evening before. I told him I was in south al. With abt 5 people and they could verify my where abouts and he ran thru a laundry list ( no clue if it was b.s.or not) of charges I would face. No clue if they would stick or not but it would have scared the crapout of me if I had done something.

Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers..........

Or how would the dog hunters feel if the other guys just started a controlled burn but didn't worry about letting it cross the property line? Fire can't read signs, you know...

Not if you've spent a lot of time and money trying to actually manage a piece of property.

If you do what you're suggesting, you're reduced to hunting exactly the way they do, rather than hunting the way you choose to.

Sorry, that ain't right.

I wouldn't shoot there dogs or get pushed around.

I haven't hunted deer with dogs in 27 years. I took up other forms of hound hutning. Since then I have had a couple run ins while still hunting.

About 20 years ago I was hunting one evening. While leaving I was flagged down by this guy who apparently had permission for the same property I did. It was also apparent he was baiting and dog hunting in a county with a closed season for deer dogg'in. He asked real friendly like if I had permission and wanted to see it. I didn't have to but I showed it to him. He went to cussing and wouldn't give me my piece of paper back.

This guy was pretty big and I'm not. I don't start trouble but I have been accused of having a temper. I just went off on him. I didn't hit him but grabbed him, pushed him and took my permission. I was ready to do more if he fought back.

He knew me after that but would turn and walk away when he saw me.

I guess I could have just shot his dogs but that just wouldn't have been fair.

Believe me the way I handled it was alot more fun. That was 20 years ago though, I would probably be on the recieving end today.

well it is what it is, I don't agree with it, but if they couldn't prove they killed there dogs then they shouldn't have stopped them, I really wish still hunter and doggers could get along better, both sides are hard headed and believe one way is bettere than other. I wish doggers would try to take more responsability, but it is hard sometimes to get the dogs cut off in time and get them caught. Now I don't think this should be a problem that happends a couple times a week, if so then they need to do something diffrent, but a dog crossing a landline every now and then, shouldn't be taking so harshly in my opinion. No matter what any one person says or does it wont change anyones opinion on this Outlaws are gonne be outlaws, and Non Doggers are gonna keep hating. So it is what it is..

Anyone ever wonder why there isn't an Anti- deer dog hunting association for the last few remaining states that continue to allow this practice. The dog hunting association stepping in here, and saying we will not rest, just feels strange. I'm picturing the dog hunting version of Jesse Jackson trying to get in the mix.

An Anti-dog hunting group would have more members, more money, more political pull, and would make a lot more sense. Large landowners like timber companies who already ban deer dog hunting would be on their side as well.

And where did 49er go? He could post a 3-pager on this one.

While I don't dog hunt or care for it I'm not for taking away someone else's right to do it. We have enough politicians for that.

Yes ban dog hunting because of a few bad apples. That's what is going in Washington right now with gun control. You can't have it both ways.

Forget rights the most money wins!!!!!!!!!

This is the reason you take it up with the owner of the dogs,NOT the dogs. After reading the article the problem sounds like it could be the sheriff's dept.If he would not do anything about it when the dogs were shot,he probably didn't or wouldn't do anything when the hunters complained. The doghunters association and its members will not rest until this matter is handled in a proper manner.I do not condone the practice of letting your dogs run on others property, but there is a right way and a wrong way to handle ANY situation. If you have problems with dogs on your property and your local law officials will not address the problem contact your local chapter of the doghunters association and tell them what your problem is,they may not can stop it but they might can. Most problem doghunters are probably not members of the doghunters association, but you can bet that they know who they are. This has been a problem and will continue to be a problem. But PLEASE don't shoot a mans dog.

What would you have the deputies do to handle the situation?

To this I say the same thing I have said to friends who dog hunted...........If you don't police your fellow dog hunters that is exactly what will happen. I grew up running dogs and loved it, would like to do it at least one more time just to take my son. BUT for years I have heard the same things from many dog hunters about "my dogs can't read no hunting signs". Running the roads to cut deer off in a 4x4 or ATV is also a common practice and has been for years. Well if the dog hunters association TRUELY wanted to stop dogs from being killed they would police their own and quit worrying about other landowners killing dogs which have repeatedly run deer across their property. If it's a accident and not happening on a regular basis ,not many people will kill a dog. On the other hand if it happens often and something has been said to the dogs owner who does nothing to stop it, I would not hesitate to put a stop to it myself. Those friends of mine always said there was no way it would ever be outlawed, they were wrong for most of the state and if this stuff keeps happening the rest will soon follow. I hope it don't happen because it is part of our heritage and if done right it is fun and don't interfere with other landowners, but a few outlaws ruin it for everyone else.

the owners of the dogs should be charged with trespassing and animal abuse each time their dogs are shot on someone else's land. I do not condone shooting a pet or a hunting dog unless the owner has been forewarned. I feel like the dept of conservation does an adequate job of giving the warning by listing the start date of deer season. If you care anything about your animals, and you know they can't read a posted sign, you should read it for them.

X2!!!! How is a still-hunting piece of property going to hold deer if there are dogs running them all around the county?
I don't have this problem in my county except the occasional farm dog running through, even that gets to me though.
I can see this bein a problem especially with serious hunters trying to manage there land. We didn't do all that hard work to have your pack of hounds running around messin it all up!
I wouldn't kill a dog for the heck of it, I love dogs. But dog owners, especially hunting dog owners, need to keep up with there animals. If you can't keep them on your property don't run them. And for this reason I feel no remorse for them
