 My son and I killed a Cottonmouth at 10:00a.m. yesterday and this Diamondback after lunch. We were hunting and hanging stands. Be careful out there; it's plenty hot!

I was thinking about that this morning. This weekend is going to be warm and the snakes will be crawling.

Longspur, your child is in far more danger holding that "dead" snake up for photo ops than when he was crawling around alive.
That makes no sense whatsoever.
NEVER let a child hold and handle a dead snake. Close to 80% of snake bite victims were attempting to kill or holding a dead snake. Think about that.

Your son has 10x bigger set of ummm berries than I do. I don't hold poisonous snakes except with a long stick !!!

That snake was dead for 5 hours before I let him hold it. I made certain that he saw the fangs and knew that if he let it go that he would be just as messed up as if it were alive. We talked about the dangers thoroughly and I spent several minutes showing him how to grip it. If you look closely, you can see that he has a very good grip. I wouldn't have allowed him to hold if I weren't absolutely certain that he was safe. With that said, it's still good advice and I appreciate it.

Would make a good mount if you know a good taxidermist Haha!!! You think? I'll have to start "checking prices". It took about 10 minutes to kill it. I specifically didn't want to mess it up for that reason. I used a 7' long 2X2 and was still nervous. But he's in perfect condition.

Would a bite from a snake like this kill a deer? It would have the same impact on a deer that it would have on a person; i.e. massive tissue loss.

It is true the vast majority of poisonous snake bites occur when people are trying to catch a snake, but I question the "holding a dead snake" part. My brother is an ER doc in the desert southwest. He treats rattlesnake bites on very regular basis. The vast, vast majority of bites occur on the hand, but not from apparently "dead" snakes, but from very live ones people are trying to catch.

I do corroborate the necessity of being careful where you step, no matter the time of year. The one time my snakeboots actually saved me was in early January (double strike to the ankle by a cottonmouth).

Went back today and my son spotted another Diamondback in the exact spot as the one we killed yesterday, but it went down in a hole before my dad could get him. They went about 300 yds further down the road and killed another over 5' long. Now we're thinking we've got a problem.
