Hey guys. New to the forum here, but had some questions. My bros in law and I are considering going to the jan9-12 hunt on barbour co wma, but have never been there, nor are we familiar with the area. Where should we try first? where should we avoid? Anything in particular we should know before going? Any and all info concerning hunting this area would be great.

No deer there, I'd stay away...LOL The Jan hunts are either side (A or B). I've seen plenty of deer taken on both sides. The B side is thicker with lots of young pines. A side a bit more hard woods. As for where the deer are. Could'nt tell ya. Been up three times this year, and each has been a bust. They weren't movin much in that warm weather of Nov/early Dec. If ya want a Doe try a food plot or about 50-100 yds behind it. If you're lookin for a buck start early and get in the deep stuff.

Are you just given a random permit for either side or do all hunters go to one side or the other? There will three of us and kinda like to stay some what together.

The permits In Nov. and Dec. are/were for either section A or section B. The schedule for Jan. doesn't show a section A or B. Only QD, and HC. I cant speak for all management areas, but at Choccolocca, Everyone goes to the same section. I'm guessing it's because the # of hunters has decreased on WMA's over the last decade, so more hunters in one area gets more deer on thier feet.

The nov and december hunts everyone goes to one side. I've never done the Jan hunts, but from what I Understand the entire WMA is open, thats why there is only a total of 8 days in Jan. Permits are just picked up at the game check station.BTW for my two cents worth. I like the A side better. Seems like the B side gets busy with a lot of people coming in from Eufala and truck "hunting"

Sounds like we may try A side. Ill get on google maps and start scouting. Nothing i hate worse than to go in blind.

Some of my buddies and I used to hunt between Hanging Tree rd. and White Oak Way rd. It seems like at least one of us would bring home a doe or two every hunt. Occasionally one of us would get a decent buck.

When I was down there in Nov there is some nice plots down there, but for some reason every body, there brother, and their cousins wanted to hunt on the southside of the Mgmt area (right where you describe)... talk about crowded. First time I ever seen that.

I would like to be where everybody else is not. Nothing like day break with 32 other orange caps staring at you.

well stay away from the plots and get more than 100yds away from the roads. That seems to be where alot of people hang out. I admit I was one of em, but now I'll take the extra time to get "lost" in the wilderness.

I'm planin on goin to both the Jan hunts, but wont be showin up till the Thurs. Are you gonna camp there or stay else where.

I try to make a hunt during Jan each year.Just for a change of scenery. Nice campground,lots people,super thick woods,lots sign, had 1 chance at a buck in 7 years and he was nice.Hunt all day the amount of people running around between 10 and 2 is unbelievable.Tring to decide between this hunt and the next myself.

We will prob stay at camp ground to keep cost down and keep from having to drive from a motel to the hunting spot etc.

Well I should be there, give me a shout when time gets closer to the hunt. If I am there I'll point in ya the right direction to start. I reccomend the campground. It's free generally pretty clean (depends on the crowd there), and conveinent. Me and my buddy use to just pop tents, but the wife bought me a camper I been itchin to try out, so no more cold nights for me.

Sounds good. We have a huntin camper but it will need tires before we drive 5 hours. May just use the tent and heater to save the fuel of pullin a camper. Ill give you a hollar close to time.

if ya do come down bring firewood for the first night. There is plenty of cut pine in the cutovers, just gotta stop and pick it up. I usually do this after the first morning hunt.

I may get crucified for divulging, but if you get on A side (think thats the west side) - there's usually a good buck killed every year out of the swamp just west of the big clearcut north of the check station.

OH! And be SURE to obey all the walk-in only signs - don't even put your front bumper past 'em. If the wardens don't contact you, another hunter will do it for them. Last I checked, it was permissible to take a vehicle past only if you were retrieving a deer, but you should ask the biologist about that.

Thanks for the info. That was going to be my next question. At skyline we can take the atv to get a downed deer but GW told me that if he caught us in the woods we better have a deer on the rack or be able to lead him to one on the ground.
Are the places off limits marked well?
