Any luck? I've seen a lot of rutting activity with scrapes and such, but still not seeing ANY deer. I've hunted Wheeler twice this week and twice last week with nothing seen. Mostly Blackwell Swamp and Limestone Springs. I'm pretty much done with Wheeler and even though it is right down the street from our home, I would rather drive an hour to hunt in a place I know I will at least see a deer.

I'm going back out in the boat Saturday since I had good luck last week. Scouting seems to be the ticket on finding deer on the refuge. When I hunt the refuge i try to spend at least 2 hrs in between the morning and evening hunts to scout. For example a guy I hunt with some spends more time in the woods than anyone I know scouting but he has killed 5 on the refuge already. That's a normal year for him but he puts the time in and has good success

Im 52 yrs old and have spent many many hours and walked many a mile on Wheeler.All Im gonna say is this.If your not seeing deer regularly you are not doing it right.
Wisdom doesn't always come with age.

What I call pinch points are just about the same thing as a funnel. Say you got big block of woods 300 yards across on one side is a river or creek on the other is a big field. What I look for around wheeler is a place where the creek cuts into the woods closing the gap between the field and it. Even better is when a beaver has a small creek dammed up creating a long 2 to 3 foot deep pond in the woods running between the field and river. This creates a choking point that deer will travel through and allow you to have a good chance at not only seeing deer but getting a shot on one. Don't get me wrong them deer aren't afraid of the water they will cross it any time but I found that cruising bucks will hug the water line looking for doe's that have passed through. And the doe's follow the water line's eating left over acorns and seeds that are on the waters edge or floating just off the bank. I don't know if I explained it that well but I tried. Good hunting.

I tried the mountain bike once out there in wheeler and it wasn't a good day. I tried to tie my deer cart to the bike with a bungee cord (not the best idea I ever had).

Hunted in the off and on rain at Wheeler Saturday morning. I took my crossbow this time because I have feather fletchings on my compound which don't do well in the rain. Nothing seen Saturday morning, but I shot a buck last weekend on the family land in Blount Co. and I'm headed back down to Monroe Co. Friday-Sunday and I always see plenty of deer down there. Good luck the rut should be peaking if it isn't already over on Wheeler.

Man I wish I could get out there right now but I am on baby watch (expecting my wife to go into labor any day) So I hate to get to far out in the swamps.
