I believe in positive training also. Does the dog know what "NO" means. Once he knows what this command means then you can use it WITH the shock collar.
That being said if he doesn't know what he is doing wrong shocking him will create problems.If possible you may try putting the dog on an very long rope and let him do some short retrieves. When he trys to play just say no or stop and pull him toward you. After this you can incorporate the shocking collar when you give the dog the stop command. The dog will grow out of this but dont let it become a habit.
Vickie Lamb Deal wrote a book that is really good on training dogs with shock collars.
Repetition is the key. I used the long rope idea on a deer chaser I had. The dog would not stop once it smelled a deer. I just kept her in the truck and when I saw a deer I would drop the tailgate. I would yell "no" and when the dog got to the end of the rope I would adjust the behavior. Later I incorporated the shock collar. It took a while but she finially figured out it wasn't worth it.
