What's the latest you would get into a stand in the afternoon? I don't get to hunt as much as I would like and have started hunting after work, usually in the stand by 4 pm but was wondering if that would be counter productive

I guess it depends on what you are hunting. If i hunt a green field by the house, 4 is ok, but if I am hunting the woods 3:30 is the latest for me.

If you have 30 minutes of legal light left it's not too late. Killed many a buck going after work and getting in place with only 30 mins or less to hunt. Especially during the rut.
Of course I live only 15 minutes from my property so it does not seem to be a waste of time for me to do that.

Agreed 30 minutes is plenty for me. The key is choosing places that you can get to without spooking deer already in fields. Buddy of mine has killed quite a few by sneaking into a greenfield and standing by a tree away from major trails.

I've been known to crawl up to an open field or food plot and hunt from the ground with a low bi-pod. It's much quieter, especially if deer are already in the field.
Take your kids hunting instead of hunting your kids.

yep depends for me also. on a regular day this time of year im trying to be set up by 3:00. but if time doesnt permist for this i wouldnt go any later than an hour before dark to actually sit and hunt. if your just planning on sneaking up to a field and shooting something already out there any time during legal shooting hours

I've killed my fair share of them by sneaking up on them. Hunting the wind and putting a successful stalk on some unsuspecting feeding does it about as fun as it gets for me. Killed a couple bucks that way too.

I killed a big(134") five year old eight pointer in Greene Co by sneaking up on a green field with maybe fifteen minutes of shooting light left. Wind was wrong for the stand, blowing from stand to field. Maybe 10 deer in front of the stand and another 10 150 yards to the left. I quietly ran down a road that led downwind to the stand from the river, as I got to the stand the deer in front were just starting to smell me as I looked for the buck. I spotted him 150 yards to the left, maybe 10 yards in the woods on a woods road. Deer in front blew, everyone on alert...too late I had a good hit on the buck as the field emptied.
Sometimes late is better....
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

It's rare, but I stuck one 5 minutes after I got settled in a tree. Nothing is a definite and anything can happen.

Killed one of my biggest deer about a week into gun season one year after locking my keys in my car and spending two hours getting them out. Was so pissed I decided to go sit anyway with maybe 45 minutes of light. Caught a old roman nosed bruiser moving through some thick stuff in a cutover in Fayette. Any time is good as long as you don't mess it up walking in.
