I may be wrong, hell it wont be the first time, but i think he nailed him. What I see is at impact the deer flinches and as he runs off the shoulder is lagging behind the deer.

This makes me think that the bullet has smashed the bone and more than likely that deer is deader than doornail. Hope your little buddy finds him, I'd look long and hard.

And as for no blood, I agree with the previous poster. Many factors play into this and I wouldn't let it phase me. Use the resources on this sight and get a tracking dog involved if you can. Some of those dogs can actually follow the scent left behind by the gland in between the deers hooves, so no blood is necessary. Beautiful buck and good luck!

Thanks for all the input guys. We just got back a few minutes ago. We looked hard for about 5 hours and did not find him. We jumped a big buck that looked pretty healthy as he ran away, so we are not sure if that was him or not. If it was, he should have a good chance of surviving.

I was able to slow the footage down frame by frame on my 27" imac and he was definitely hit in the leg. Not sure exactly where, but it looks like it was just about as high as you can get without getting into the vitals. My son has killed a pile of deer and this one is the first deer he has lost. It is also his biggest. I think he was just a little rattled and probably jerked the trigger. Whatever the reason, he made a poor shot. When he gets home from school, I will talk with him about it and let him know that it happens sometimes and hopefully it will be a teachable moment for him.

It sucks. I have a lot of trail camera pics and videos of this buck and it was one I have been after since the season started. I finally figured out what he was doing and the plan worked perfectly yesterday, all except for the end result. Hopefully he will survive and we will catch up with him later down the road.

Tough luck, but we've all been there before, unfortunately.

Im thinking u may get pics of him with a jacked up leg jack! Its deer hunting. It sucks but this kind of stuff happens to everybody at some point. Put out a camera and hopefully he will show up

Well, I just talked with him about it. He was pretty tore up, but took it pretty well for a 10 year old. The good thing was I think he was more upset about injuring the deer than the fact that we could not find it. He wants to go shoot the gun and make sure that this doesn't happen again. I think it was a teachable moment for sure.

I see a brisket shot. Just a little too low, but hey either youll get another chance this year or next year he will be a 3 legged stud!

I shot one that was hit like that weeks later and he was fine except for the bad leg. I think the deer will live if that helps you any. It is hard to stomach but as these guys said it is unfortunately part of hunting.

But i have to ask where does the hair that you can see over his back come from? I agree that it looks/looked like a leg hit and the leg is definitely broke, but it is hard to imagine the fur coming up so high off of a front leg hit...

That question may never be answered but if you don't find him i hope he recovers. Looks like a nice one.

Good question. Been trying to figure that out for hours. It's possible that it is not hair, but the top of one of the weeds he is standing in?? But it looks like hair to me.

It's amazing when you have 1080i HD video that can be slowed down to a 1/24 second frame and STILL not know exactly what happened.

Hopefully we will catch up with him later and the mystery can be solved with total confidence.

I have watched it and I just can not pin point where he hit... I can see the shock wave from impact and I want to say it is just right in the shoulder. I am real sorry yall didnt find him.

What cal rifle does you son hunt with? And what ammunition do you shoot?

Leg shot

Looking for a deer that you shot at and know for a fact that you hit, is NEVER a waste of time!! You should always at least look no matter what animal if you shoot at it!!

He shoots a .243 with Hornady 95 gr SST bullets. He has killed 2 bucks and 7 does from 45-125 yds. Some of them have dropped right in their tracks and none of them have gone very far. Good blood trails on those that we had to track. I guess he just got a little rattled on this one.

Looks like bone fragments flying up behind him to me....I think leg just below chest cavity. Hopefully you will get some pics or another sighting for confirmation. It's hunting and it happens.

I know this isnt my deer or anything but it is bugging the piss outta me! To me it looks like a a good hit... Did you find any blood at all?
