A Leupold 3-18 will give you all you ever need for hunting.

I have gone with the Leupold VX5HD in 4x20. AU338MAG is correct though. 18x is plenty

Exactly this. Best buy in a scope today. EuroOptic bought all the leftover first gen of this model, and they can be bought for $869.99. Call, and they will likely ship it for free, but they haven't been discounting this model like they will do sometimes. Still has full Leupold factory warranty.

It ain't a Schmidt-Bender, but at the $450+ price difference, it's a great buy. We upgraded several rifles that didn't have illuminated reticles when this all happened.

For those who don't know, EuroOptic is one of the best full line optics and firearms dealers around. They stock more brands than anyone else that I know of, from inexpensive all the way to unreal.

Current bolt action list has almost 6000 rifles, ranging from a single shot Crickett 22 @ $144 up to the latest, greatest Gunwerks Hamr @ almost $19,000, along with the Mauser Presidential just a few bucks cheaper.

Scopes range today from a $35 used Bushnell, to the top of the line Schmidt-Bender at $8929, and over 2600 options between.

Indeed they do. When I bought my Kowa spotting scope and eyepiece separetely, they beat everybody else's price by a LOT.

You are correct sir. The only bad news is many of the upper end VX5HD’s are no longer available. However they still have plenty and they are great prices. Furthermore, I bought my son in law a Tikka T3x Ember for an amazing price!

Are you going to be shooting 1,000 yards? I mean if most of your shots are in the 600 and under, you would be better with staying at the 12. The light transmission will be better at dawn and dusk. The old 3-12 (old, is relative in this case) is optimal. The S&B T96 is a fantastic scope, and eurooptic has some nice ones on sale. You also can't go wrong with an old zeiss Diavari C.
