Seems to me that LSU didn't break any rules. Maybe ethical rules but not actual rules. A lot of colleges are butt hurt because they don't have the resources that LSU has. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Bear Bryant hand out scholarships like candy to get the best players during his time coaching when he won all those championships and I never hear anybody complaining about that. I'm not an LSU fan by no means, just an outsider looking in.
Thats why they started putting in roster limits. Bear would get the best talent out there with scholarships and load the bench just to keep those guys from going to other schools. Some really great players didnt get much playing time because of it. However, back then getting a free ride to college was more important than playing football.
This is exactly correct. I lived through it. He would recruit as many quarterbacks as possible, because in most cases back then the quarterback was the most talented and gutsy player on a typical high school team. Once he got them all he would turn most of them into tight ends, defensive backs, receivers, running backs, etc... and only a few would get a chance to play quarterback at Alabama. Of course with the wishbone, the quarterback was a glorified running back anyway.
