A thread on summer cedar that turns into grown men calling names with political overtones and chest thumping........only on Aldeer.

Dog fennel produces beneficial effects by relaxing the brain. Whether taken in supplement or herbal form, dog fennel relaxes the mind. It doesn't relax my mind, I hate that stuff. If I'm bushhogging and miss even a single plant, I'll double back and take it out

It pisses me off too. I think the people that write those herbal tea blogs also smoke a lot of weed so their minds are already pretty relaxed.

I don't think if you blended Xanax, Summer Cedar, Mimosa, Mary Jane and Veterinary Qualudes into a mushroon tea, it would be enough to relax this bunch. Come on deer season.

Dog fennel is a primary indicator of severely disturbed, clear-cut, burned, or overgrazed land. Tillage, heavy compaction from livestock, and frequent clearing shatter the delicate mycelial networks of saprophytic and mycorrhizal fungi. This disruption leaves the soil biology heavily dominated by bacteria, creating the exact environment where dog fennel excels
Bacterially dominated soils process nitrogen into nitrates (NO₃⁻), which are rapidly taken up by early-successional plants and weeds. Conversely, fungally dominated soils (found in mature forests and undisturbed perennial systems) maintain nitrogen primarily as ammonium (NH₄⁺). Dog fennel thrives on the high-nitrate flush characteristic of active bacterial systems
Interestingly, dog fennel itself actively resists fungi. The plant contains high concentrations of essential oils (like thymol methyl ether) that act as potent natural antifungals and insecticides. Rather than seeking out fungal partnerships, the plant has evolved to defend itself against fungal pathogens in the environment
If you are trying to naturally suppress dog fennel without heavy chemical applications, shifting the soil balance toward a higher fungal-to-bacterial (F:B) ratio—by minimizing tilling, adding woody organic mulch, and allowing native perennial grasses to establish—is a highly effective long-term strategy

Didnt know dog fennel was an anti-fungal. I guess folks can rub it on jock itch and get fixed right up.

A lot of times its because the stand has recently been cut and before it got cut it spent years or decades building up organic matter in the soil……and for every 1% organic matter you have there’s roughly 20-30 lbs of organic nitrogen per acre that gets mineralized and released each year Actually now that I think about it......those skidders and cutters are gonna pretty much be tilling the topsoil which is gonna release a far greater flush of organic nitrogen than just that 20-30 lbs......You're likley getting a rapid burn of a chit ton of stored nutrients......

The property beside mine was logged 2 years ago and it's summer cedar city.

Its actually not a bad thing……Dog fennel has excellent soil building properties…..You have a lot of very fine vegetation in the “leaves” that will rapidly break down as well as the larger stalk for the long term OM…….Nature is using dog fennel to aggressively recoup all of those stored nutrients that got released and recycle them back to the soil surface…..Its the first step in succession to restoring it back to what would eventually become the perennial prairie plant community if managed correctly……A lot of things we despise we just don’t understand.....The sweet spot is having that fungal dominated prairie that has bison come along and disrupt it just enough to stimulate early successional annuals....If you disrupt it too much and destroy the soil then you get more and more plants that are just for repairing soil and have no food value for wildlife.....That's designed like that on purpose

Just throwing it out there for what its worth but I’d be sure to add some nitrogen when you plant…..That dog fennel has sucked up nutrients that you’re returning to the soil but it takes a while to go through the full cycle and become available to your plants…..In the short term its going to be sucking up any available nitrogen in your soil for decomposition which will rob it from your new seedlings……With it being green all of those fine leaves may help with rapid breakdown but I still think you’re gonna want to add some N with all of that brown “hay” I saw in your other pic….A lot of folks like to skip nitrogen at planting and come back later on but you don’t want seedlings emerging in a nitrogen deficient environment…..

I just thought I had a lot of dog fennel! My soils are too dry to allow that kind of growth, but it's thick enough in spots. I mowed some of my quail and turkey strips this past weekend and there was definitely some 8ft plus dog fennel patches in there. I'll come back in November and do some light disking. I will say dog fennel does make some pretty decent quail and poult habitat on my place. Good overhead structure with clean dirt under it.
Mowing it now is definitely better for the radiator than waiting until it flowers out in a month or so. That is a nightmare.
