Don’t hate the player, hate the game. NCAA and the super conferences are all at fault in this, way more so than Kiffin. They are the ones that turned college football into the Wild Wild West.
Player: “I know I’ve started now for 4 years after red-shirting, but remember, I broke my pinky finger, my freshman year running scout team”.
NCAA: “Sorry to hear that happened 5 yrs ago, but we believe you. Go ahead and stay and play an extra year. Wait a minute, seems I remember you missing a couple games your junior year when you had the flu and were sick as a dog. Why don’t you take a year for that too. But that’s absolutely it, we’re only going to allow you to be on the roster for 7 yrs and on the field for 6.”
NCAA: “NIL is a great idea. Let’s not put any rules in place. Get what you can and you can spend as much money as you can milk from your boosters. Let’s create a transfer portal and let kids transfer as many times as they want. That’s a great idea.”
SEC: “let’s cannibalize the best schools in the non-p-4 conferences and create a super-conference and start an arms race for TV revenues, sponsorships, and advertising. Great idea!! Show me da’ money”
Kiffin is just playing the game. If the game has no rules, then he can play it anyway he wants. SEC is claiming historical precedent, but they tossed all that out the window themselves, when greed and power began influencing every move and decision. Chickens are just coming home to roost.
