That’s probably your culprit…….Dog fennel loves excess free nitrogen in the soil……The good thing is that it sucked it up and converted it to carbon to feed back to the soil…..
Did you terminate your cereal grains to grow clover or did they mature and go to seed?

I would leave a strip of it around the whole field as a soft edge, then leave a stand of it in the center of the field and stick a feeder in the middle of it.

BPI, oats and wheat are both cereal grains. Ryegrasses are not, however.

😂. Why does dog fennel bloom in a poor dirt cutover?? A lot of times its because the stand has recently been cut and before it got cut it spent years or decades building up organic matter in the soil……and for every 1% organic matter you have there’s roughly 20-30 lbs of organic nitrogen per acre that gets mineralized and released each year

According to agricultural research from the University of Florida IFAS Extension, limiting nitrogen fertilization in pastures actually exacerbates dog fennel infestations. Desirable forage grasses (like bahiagrass or bermudagrass) suffer without nitrogen, allowing the highly competitive dog fennel to easily overtake the field.
