Any of y'all into squirrel hunting? I haven't been in a few years but got to thinking it would be a good reason to walk the rugged back country of Bankhead, enjoy the Fall and get some exercise. I really don't care to eat rodents, but the dogs gotta eat too. Just thinking of cool Fall days out with an accurate 22 while we all endure this miserable Summer weather... Was even thinking of trying to train our new pups to hunt. That might be a challenge since they are Aussies, LOL. You never know till you try.

I always like to take my Speedmaster for a walk in our Creek Bottom. Once it cools off a little.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

Might as well, ain't nothing else in Bankhead worth hunting. I'll sit around and wait on a pine goat a limited amount, but not much. Miss the hogs. Thought squirrels would be a distant second to hog hunting but could provide for some fun days in the field. Probably the healthiest thing I've done was 10 years of hiking Bankhead backwoods looking for hogs. Now I'll just be looking for squirrels.

I loved skwerl hunting when I was younger, but its hard to find the time these days. It was great practice with a rifle and I was a much better off hand shooter in those days. I joined a club several years ago because they had over 1000 acres of bottom land hardwood. Skwerl hunting was great but some asswipe in the club thought skwerl hunting scared deer so they stopped allowing it after a couple years. When they changed that rule I handed in my gate keys and said bye.

Never hunted Bankhead but may look into it if skwerl hunting is good.

Iron sights on .22 and head shots only for bonus points. 😁.

All jokes aside, lot of ā€œseasonā€ deer hunters couldn’t go on public land and kill a limit of squirrels I don’t think. It’s more of a challenge than you think. Lots of fun too, good groceries to boot.

Maybe you'll get back to it. Don't know that the hunting in Bankhead is any better or worse than anywhere else, but the place is beautiful. Maybe I'll see you out there.

If i had someone that would eat them, I would kill a few. Fun, good exercise and good rifle practice. I just don’t like them enough to clean and cook them for myself.

Sounds like fun. Let's plan on it.

Was thinking of trying my 94/22 early on (ghost ring sights, yikes) and mainly use the CZ457 American my Dad left me. Might run my Bergara BMR 17HMR suppressed at some point, probably when the leaves are down.

Check your PM.

Grew up squirrel hunting with a benjamine - killed bunch of squirrels and rabbits. We ate them

Grandad was first one to take me squirrel hunting at 9 with a 12 - been hooked to hunting ever since. Ain’t been squirrel hunting in many years
Did get to go with squirrel dog once - that was cool

Hunt the wind - leave it better than you found it - love your neighbor as you love your self

Any of y'all have a trained squirrel dog? I'd love to run my pups with one and see if I might get lucky with one of the Aussies (I know, its a long shot).

Looks like season opens the second Saturday in Sept. I know, it'll be hot, the snakes/ticks out, etc. The first cooler days I'm planning to get out there, GLW. Look forward to seeing some beautiful country again.
