Banning drones would be way down the list of things that would improve hunting in Alabama for me.
Using a drone to locate a buck isn’t much different than using a cell camera to tell you when a buck is daylighting on a corn feeder. You either have a fair chase ethic or you don’t.

I gotta disagree with you there.......Using a drone to locate specific bucks and where they're currently bedded, etc is way different in my opinion.....Just curious but have you been around one being used yet??
Don is correct about the extremely high potential for abuse with drones and its only gonna get worse as more people get them in their hands……Just like he said, big bucks make people do stupid things……

Way different. Watch some videos on YouTube of a thermal drone. One could look at every deer on a several hundred acre property in just a few minutes. There are guys for hire that will come out and do a survey for you. Only takes a little bit to know every deer on your property.
I’ve seen the videos and understand the potential for abuse. Again, you either have ethics or not. Drones will not be banned, just like cell cameras. Landowner rights will trump all else. It’s impossible to enforce what either are being used for on a wide scale.

The reason I was asking is that watching it on youtube is different than being there in person and watching how it goes down……Its pretty eye opening to see…..You say they wont be banned but several states are already banning them……
"The IDNR states that using any drone (including thermal imaging) to hunt, scout, locate, or track wildlife—including recovering wounded or dead deer—violates the Illinois Wildlife Code (520 ILCS 5/2.33)"
I don’t know if you listened to the first video but like Don said…..”I didn’t even realize all the ways they could be abused until my listeners started filling me in on it”……They’re a poachers dream tool just like he said…..We’re literally at a point now where folks like him are having to protect their property with drone detectors……Everyone’s lease is now at the mercy of the guy who wants to fly it and see what you got to see if he wants to outbid you on the price…..Don was really throwing shade at everyone’s favorite urban big buck killers there at the end…..We're in a whole new era of deer hunting now
Again, impossible to prove motive on a wide scale basis. Sure, an idiot here or there will be busted, but there is no way to prove why you are flying a drone unless you’re leaving an obvious trail of evidence. Same as using a cell camera to kill a deer in real time.
In a state that allows baiting, xbows in archery season, no tagging system, 2.5 months of continuous firearm during all phases of the rut, drones aren’t going to have a herd wide impact.

I agree about proving motive……..That was the same thing Don was saying about why the potential is so high for abuse…..How are you gonna prove it in most cases??.....
I think you’re focused on the wrong thing though if all you’re looking at is simply a “herd wide impact”……We’re talking about targeted use of them on high end properties……There’s no hiding anymore no matter what you do or don’t post on social media…..Its why Don is having to protect his property with a drone detector……I watched a podcast from Ohio where two guys were using them to locate and poach deer in a city park in Columbus…..You’re not gonna have anything to worry about if all you hunt is the chitty land and you don’t have any good deer on your place……..I guess we’re just gonna have to let it play out before folks with see the full scope of the impact when every Tom, Dick, and Harry has one…..We’re not far from it…..Maybe one or two more seasons…..
Reckon how many of these really good public land bucks we’re seeing killed now were located with a drone that got launched from a backyard in the middle of the night??.....Is the state gonna protect all of the management areas in the future with drone detectors to prevent it from happening??

Point acknowledged… If you’re flying a drone over my place looking for the one 14” 8pt that my neighbor let slip by,you’re hard up 😂

I dont think a drone or a thermal can see tru the thick stuff like a pine thicket or our thick over grown swamps....they will only see the deer out in the open...we use thermals a lot killing hogs around our place . i'm not for or against it . your property use what you want , if it's legal.

The poachers in Ohio even had a youtube hunting channel and were getting paid by sponsors……Now whether it be guys getting paid to find big bucks and kill them on camera or guys just wanting the glory of being the big buck killer on social media…….drones will be and are already being used to do some shady things to make that happen……I’m a realist that knows exactly what big bucks will make good people do that might not otherwise be a “criminal”…….Put this temptation in everyone’s hands and its just a recipe for problems
