I’ve been trying to find a legit source to certify and grade some things I inherited from dad.
I’ve got a few coins that are (for conversation, let’s say) worth a bit more than face value.
I’m having difficulty finding a way to get these coins graded, certified and appraised legitimately.
There’s plenty of information on the internet that points to shady outfits who want you pay them or send them your coins.
That ain’t gonna happen.
So my question is do any of you guys have a recommendation for someone (or some outfit) who can be trusted?
I hate making a good first impression. There’s no way I can keep that shit up.

So my question is do any of you guys have a recommendation for someone (or some outfit) who can be trusted? Call a coin shop and ask them if they submit coins for grading. They will charge you a fee to do it for you, or you can save yourself some money and submit them yourself. If you follow the directions there should not be a problem. Folks send coins worth 5 and 6 figures to them on a regular basis. Most folks prefer to use one of the two most popular grading companies. PCGS or NGC. PCGS graded coins usually get higher value returns than NGC graded coins but it really doesn't matter. Thanks Skinny. I did make a profile with PCGS but they wanted to sell me a subscription with various levels and that sends up red flags for me immediately. But I’ll check into it a bit deeper. 👍

Unfortunately, for most folks, when they inherit the shoe box of silver dollars they find out that the majority of them are what you call Cull Silver Dollars which means they are only worth the silver weight in them. You can buy them for about the same price of silver or less at most coin shops. Better condition coins, rare varieties and such though can fetch high prices. If grand daddy was a real collector though, then some of those coins can be real high dollar coins. I had several silver coins and my Grandma’s dominos in a safe deposit box. Didn’t check it for years and when I did the box was gone
and different people work at the bank and nobody has any clue what happened. If you keep a safety box Id check it a couple times a year.

Then, even when you verify that you have one that’s worth 4 or 5 digits, that isn’t money until you find the particular collector willing to pay for it. Thats why you get it graded. If its graded and is a high digit coin its very liquid and most dealers will be willing to pay close to full retail for it. You can take the graded coin and shop it around to dealers fast till you find the highest buyer. If its not graded then dealers will be all over the place on what they will give you.
