I watch the door and I make eye contact with folks who walk in. There have been times where I thought somebody may be up to something and the eye contact I made with them seemed to let them know that at least one person was paying attention to them.

Eye contact is important whether you're in a restaurant, walking through the parking lot or wherever you may be. Always be scanning your surroundings and be prepared.
I always sit facing the door. Hopefully nothing will ever happen but I'm going to see what's coming if it ever does.
