Great website. I use this website alot to look at old aerial imagery. Its cool to see places you have always known as one thing used as another in the past.

Me too. First found it to look at what my Grandmother’s homeplace area looked like. I was amazed at the difference as the woody spots I knew were bare. Can’t imagine the work that went into clearing the land back then.

My Father’s family settled in South Conecuh before it was split up to make Escambia county.

Some of my ancestors settled / founded Woodville, before Alabama became a state. I believe both Woodville and Lim Rock were in Decatur Co. There is a bronze marker on the East side of US72 near CR 5 ( goes up to Grant) that tells about Decatur Co.

Here's another fun fact. It's my understanding the part of the Florida panhandle west of near Apalachicola was supposed to be Alabama and there was some sort of mix up. What about it Skinny?

No and Yes and Yes and No. The Florida panhandle was always Spanish Florida until the war settled it and Florida became a state. However folks saw the obvious that it made more sense for it to be part of Alabama. But politics and dipshits got in the way along the way and that never happened. Things went back and forth for a long time over it and there was even an attempt for Alabama to outright purchase the panhandle from Florida after the Civil War, but back then it was seen as a waste of money (dumbasses). Plus, folks up north did not want Alabama to gain more economic power because we did a lot of damage with economic power prior to the Civil War. They had to keep us down.

What I remember about it was that in 1869 Alabama offered to buy all of West Florida from Apalachicola. West Florida residents voted on it and approved the measure, but idiots in the Alabama legislature got to arguing stupid crap like all politicians do and it never came to fruition. There were other attempts, but that one was the closest to succeeding.

Yup, Yankee politicians that were installed during Reconstruction blocked the sale in our Legislature. They feared Alabama would gain too much economic power if we owned a significant portion of the Gulf Coast.

Yup. Most of Alabama and Mississippi were called West Florida until the Revolutionary war.

My daddy's side of the family is in Jackson County Florida, and my granddaddy use to tell me about this when I was little. Can y'all imagine what the economic impact what have done for Alabama just from tourism dollars alone? Of Couse back in 1869 it was about ports and timber. Apalachicola had one the biggest exporting ports for cotton before and during The War Between The States.

The Republic of West Florida in 1810 existed for 74 days. Settlers from the FL panhandle, South AL, South MS and parts of LA tried to create an independent nation. I'm sure Skinny can give the details of that one. Their flag was the basis for the Bonnie Blue Flag or so the lore goes.

They didn't understand southern politics. They could have cut a backroom deal to get the purchase passed if they could buy the coastline for a nickel an acre. Their descendants would have been gozillionairs. I guess the carpet baggers were busy buying plantations.
