I love maps and geography. I especially love old maps. Old topo maps are the best. I have one that I had printed really nice and framed up on the cabin wall. It's an historic topo map of our area from the 1880's.

I thought this one was pretty cool. Thinking of getting it printed and framing it too. It's only from 1975, but the content is very informative.

Bear Meat Cabin Road. Never heard of it. Grew up all over Jefferson county. Old enough to remember when 20/59 was finished.

Love old maps, surveys and such myself.
Don't know why they left off route from Bridgeport, through Huntsville, to Tuscumbia and points west. Basically old US 72 and parallels the Norfolk-Southern RR (which was built prior to the Civil War) . It's been there since waaaay before 1880 and was a major east west route across NA.

I was shown part of that Bylar road through Lawrence when I was a kid. I can't remember now exactly where I was because I probably wasn't paying attention like I should have.

I’ve got pieces of railway and blacksmith tools from the Tuscaloosa Montgomery road area. There was a short line steam train that carried timber from Ridersville to Maplesville. Part of it ran right through “The Outback” and there’s still interesting things to find. Problem is using a metal detector will drive you crazy. There’s so much stuff it’s constantly beeping.

Wonder what year that one is ? Very early in Alabama's statehood part of Jackson Co was part of Decatur Co. Decatur Co, was absorbed by Madison and Jackson Counties at some point.

I remember when they built Red Mountain Expressway. When I was a little boy I grew up in Cahaba Heights and when my mom would go to downtown Birmingham to go shopping we had to drive through Mountain Brook Village and English village to get there.

I remember when we would go visit my grandparents in Sylacauga we had to drive through "The Narrows" because none of Highway 280 "Florida Short Route" was 4 lane.

I remember when some of the roadhouses just this side of the Cahaba River in Jefferson County on "The Florida Short Route" were still open. I think I drank my first beer at "The Clover Club". My dad and Mom met each other on New Year's Eve 1954 at one such roadhouse called the Miami Club. My Dad told her data that he'd buy the drinks if he went and got them. When the guy was gone he asked my Mom out.

Thanks for sharing, Irish! I love old maps and they come in handy for various outdoor hobbies. Andrew Jackson's road passes my place on Sand mountain by a few hundred feet on other property. I know a couple of guys who have had permission to metal detect portions of it and they've found a few cool items.

Great website. I use this website alot to look at old aerial imagery. Its cool to see places you have always known as one thing used as another in the past.

This is why it's important when you research your genealogy and you see the county where a birth or a marriage took place, you need to go back to a map of that time and see where all the counties were. There were lots of changes to the county borders over the years.

You and I could be friends. I have always wondered if Soto took the old Federal Road to Mabila. It was well established before it was considered "the road."
