In the early days of the petroleum industry, before Rudolf Diesel invented his engine in 1893, the middle-distillate fraction that we now call diesel was largely an unwanted waste product or a low-value byproduct discarded during the mass refining of kerosene and gasoline.

Ok...sometime in the freaking 1800's, it was considered a waste byproduct.

But, I'm pretty sure 300gr wasn't alive in the 1800's, and wasn't talking about buying it for $.15/gal in the 1800's.
