If you follow the defense industry at all you will have noticed quite some time ago that Turkey is building a pretty strong defense industry: Drones, Missiles, Fighter Jets, Tanks, etc...
Perhaps they are starting to feel a little cocky now and want to prove to potential customers that their products are battle proven against someone other than Kurdish tribesmen. Turkey is doing what Turkey has always done. They are in the middle of everything and they always have been. Turkey is where the first civilizations formed. If anybody should be dictating policy along the Mediterranean side of the Middle East its them. During Roman times, Constantinople was far more important than anything near present day Jerusalem.
