We have a tanning ledge. You don’t have to lengthen the pool or lose space. Just have it built in a “L” shape and add the tanning ledge on the “L” part. That’s what we did. Ours is about 13” deep if memory serves me. The wife enjoys it and we figure one day when grandkids come along it’ll be a great place for them until they get bigger. Our pool is 20’x40’ and the tanning ledge is 10’x12’ We looked at option but our lot has a pretty steep grade beyond the pad itself and the L would be right up on the patio. I mean like flipping a burger off the grill and into the water close. It’s going to require us to bring in a bunch of dirt in addition to what they dig out to soften the grade and also have enough dirt to support the pool wall. The house sits on a hill with a gorgeous view out the back but the hill is a little issue for the pool design.
