Not really sure what happened as it has already been fished out by the time I got to the farm last weekend. No one was hurt, thankfully.

My theory:
The operator was backing down the back side of the dam to bush hog, on the way back up the front end left the ground and the operator panicked and it got away from him. Ended up going straight across the top of the dam and into the pond.
Glad no one was injured.

That's bad but at least you have solid ground to pull on. When you are spinning all 4 wheels when you get to it ne it is bad. Backhoe or excavator will be a piece of cake

Without an override clutch, the OP situation can happen really fast. Several years ago, my old Yanmar pushed me down through the woods toward a big creek with the bush hog providing the momentum to drive the rear axle. Before I ever bush hogged again, I had an override clutch on it.

We used to have an old Farmall with live PTO and the momentum of the mower could get you in trouble fast.

I may be wrong, that looks like a MF 245? Or close to that series judging by the steering wheel. If so should be 2 stage clutch. But, I’d like to know what happens if you can shine some light on the situation. 😁

I am going with "cell phone" distraction as my first guess, unless the clutch had known issues prior. My father in law uses his MF 235 a couple times a year and the clutch is so wore out that you about have to kill it to stop it.

I have an old Zen-Noh that has almost killed me several times because of this exact situation. Hell, I almost went into the pond as well on one occasion, but an old fence post stopped me.

It was the second bale too. Went and got my back up baler, rolled 56 bales with it and it broke the pickup reel belt. He finished the next day when parts place opened.
