November of 1983 was when I killed my first. I was 13 years old and was walking in a small set of woods with my old Revelation lever action .22. Deer jumped up out of some briers and stopped at about 40yrs. 1 shot to the head and she dropped like a rock. Man I was excited for a few minutes and then I got scared. I was probably 3/4 of a mile from home and I had to cross open fields with her and I had a non legal rifle that I shot her with. It didn’t take me long to get her home but by the time I got her there, I swear she weighed a thousand pounds. And once I got her home I had no idea what to do with her. We duck hunted and rabbit hunted. Never even seen a deer cleaned before. We cleaned calves every year so I figured I’d clean her like we did the calves. That little outlawing adventure lit a fire in me and I’ve been hooked on deer hunting ever since. The legal way. October of 1985 I killed my first deer with a bow. I little Bear compound with Easton Gamegetter arrows and a 100gr. Satellite broadhead. Shot the at 15yrs. Wasn’t the best shot. Hit her in the lower neck and cut the jugular vain and she was dead within 50yds. Man I was on top of the world that day. I’ve come a long ways from those days. Wouldn’t trade them days for anything though.
It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chews your a$$ all day long.

Very young and small, my dad switched guns from a browning a5 3 inch with a man were hunting with for a 2-34 inch Remington 1100. At Harris Creek Hunting Club, in Clarke County Alabama. Dog drive, my Dad handed me the shotgun, laid back, and said wake me when the meats on the ground. Wasn't 5 minutes later a big doe ran up and stopped. I shot her at around 15 yards. Daddy jumped up thinking I had accidentally pulled the trigger. He grabbed that 1100 from me like I stole it. I pointed at the doe laying there and we started celebrating!!! Will never forget it...
Love a good hunting story, love my family and friends. Some people you can't, but acted like do.

Hunting dog drives was awesome - great story Quailman! I missed 6-10 deer probably with my shotgun over several years and then accidentally we looked at the pattern with buck shot on the ethica - was horrible - More like a scatter gun
Finally got my first rifle at 16 in 1985 and in 1985 I killed my first deer with it - an 8 point! Processor who did lot of deer said it was 2nd biggest deer he processed that year! I remember dragging him up a steep hill and I was so jacked up he felt like a feather!! The old club I was in sucked - type of club you could go a week straight without even seeing a deer so people were jacked when I killed the 8. Shot it in plot #3 which has 2 fields. The field I was in did not feel right - walked to the other at about 4:00 and 8 point was feeding. I leaned against a tree which alerted him and shot him with my new 270! He bolted which I had seen many times before with the shoot and run or misses! Walk to edge of field and he was laying at bottom of field! Never enjoyed dragging a deer so much!!

I worked two summers to buy my first rifle, a Weatherby Vanguard 30-06. I topped it with the best German glass I could find, a Simmons 44 Mag from Walmaks. I was 13 years old, and my dad and I got an invite to go to Camden to hunt on some exceptional property. I killed a 100 pound doe for my first. The next year we were invited back to bow hunt. I was sitting by a huge food plot and saw over a hundred deer, but they were all 50 yards away or further. That didn't stop me from shooting at them though. I had to get out of my stand three or four times to collect arrows and go again. Good times! Great thread Quailman, I have really enjoyed all these stories

December 22 1998. Sitting in a homemade ground blind with my dad at 8 years old. I remember being impatient thinking that we’d never see a deer and then I looked over to our left and there was a spike eating 50yds from us. DRT with my little Ruger M77 .243. I remember being on top of the world, you’d have thought that I’d killed a 160. Dad gave me some war paint on my cheeks from the bullet hole and then my uncle doused me with blood while we were cleaning it. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/fYFYaFL.jpeg)

November 3rd, 1987. I was 18 years old. I was invited on a dog hunt at Lee’s Bay hunting club between Homerville, Ga. and Fargo, Ga. The hunting club was on the edge of the Okefenokee N.W.R. According to the thermometer at the club house it was 76 degrees at 12:30pm, which was our lunch break. The morning drives had produced a bunch of deer sightings but no kills. We hit a big block of young pines not far from the camphouse at about 1:30. I was fairly new to dog hunting so I hunted with my only shotgun, an 1100 that only shot 2 3/4” shells through a modified choke. I was told to sit out in a fresh cutover about 100yds from the road near all the trucks. I was about 50yds from the pine thicket. I heard the driver straight in front of me not too far in the pine thicket encouraging the walker hounds by yelling, “whooo-weee! Get’em up!!” He did this not stop from the dirt road all the way through the pine thicket. I was already told that there had been a good buck that ran out of thicket the weekend before and ran along the treeline then crossed the road at the trucks. Thats why I had that stand, just in case he did it again. I never heard the dogs jump, instead all 5 walkers ran out of the thicket one at a time. The first four came out in the cutover, saw me and ran to me for petting. I looked up and saw the last dog come out running towards me. Right behind that dog a racked buck trotted out of the thicket and immediately turned left and started trotting down the edge of the cut. I stood, raised my trusty dove gun and shot a load of number 1 buckshot at him. He dropped in his tracks. I had placed my bead on the top of his nose and put one buckshot in the corner of his eye and a few more in his neck. My legs and arms were shaking so bad I had to sit down. The driver came out of the thicket hollering, “Did you hit him?” I just pointed in the direction of the buck. He said, “you busted his ass young man!” He called me over to the buck and we high fived. He said it was an old swamp buck, a 7pt. I still have those plaque mounted antlers. They’re still dark chocolate and still have shreads of pine tree stuck to the bases from rubbing. I have killed a couple of hundred deer since that day and several bucks much larger. But that buck will always be my number 1 deer hunting memory.
GO NOLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn’t kill my first deer until I was in my mid 20’s. I grew up hunting squirrels, quail, dove and pheasant. Went to Texas, Nebraska and Kansas as a teen for quail and pheasant with my grandfather and uncle. No one in my family deer or turkey hunted. I decided to learn how to turkey hunt on my own in my late 20’s. Been hooked ever since.

My first buck a 240lb 10 pt I shot in the face head on with buckshot from a Stevens double barrel by non-existent Campbelltown close to Lower Peach Tree Alabama. I was 9 years old, it broke his antlers and he landed about 3 feet from me.
I thought I saw Sasquatch in there but it was a negro named Elroy that came to help me out. 🤣😂🤣😂

Dec. 26, 1984. 1st day of doe season back then. I was 18 and had just started college at AUM. I had an aluminum tube ladder stand that I got for Christmas and a Marlin 30-30 open sight rifle that my high school girlfriend’s dad had given me (wished I still had that gun!). Walked in with both and put up the stand and climbed up. No sling. No pull up rope. No safety belt. 🙄
This tract was in Elmore county on my dad’s boss’s land around Real Island at lake Martin. I was close enough to the water I could hear boats and folks talking on the lake. Anyway, I was sitting there and after an hour or so to my right I see a deer walking straight towards me at my 3:00. “I’m thinking oh my God, there’s a deer!!” I turned around and had my legs hanging off the side of the stand and raised my gun. That’s when I saw he had like 3-4 inch spikes! So now I’m really freaked out because I now know he’s a buck! Well, I took aim at his front shoulder as he’s quartering to me. It he sees me move and when I shot, I hit him farther back than I wanted.
So he started running directly behind me so I spin around and start working that 30-30 like Matt Dillion. Aiming at brown and I keep shooting til I’m empty. I see the poor thing cross a creek and bed down facing away from me about 40 yards away. I watch him for a bit but he’s pretty alert with his head up. So I load 2 more bullets in and put the sight on the back of his neck and that was it.
I got to him and I was so happy! Deer probably wasn’t 100lbs but I felt like I had just killed a 170 BC buck! I managed to get him field dressed and drug him back to the road. My oldest younger brother was there and helped me load him up into the back of my 1980 Honda Civic and we headed home but not before stopping at every little gas station between there and Prattville so I could show off my trophy!!

I was 15 and it was the last day of the 1978 season. Our lease was between Selma and Plantersville off Highway 22. We were making a dog drive just before lunch. I don't know how I got out of being a driver for that hunt but I was on a stand. As the drivers pushed by me I happened to look over my right shoulder and a basket racked seven point was walking toward the drivers. He was beautiful in the cloudless sunshine. One shot from my Winchester 12 gauge pump put him down. I still remember the chunks of bone and meat in my mouth after my uncle snuck up behind me to bloody my face.

I was 13 and had been after em pretty hard for a year or so but we didn’t have many deer on our place and does were off limits, A friend offered for me to come hunt his place on the river and I climbed up in an old homemade stand in an oak on the edge of a greenfield. A doe and two little ones came out about 50 yards away and I was shaking so bad as I raised that old 78 sportsman 30.06. I took my first shot and she just looked up so I racked another one in and she took off. I got her on the 5th shot 😂.
