This is fascinating and kind of scary... Lots of used book stores that carry rare and hard to find books are having extremely large orders being placed, like 10,000 books at at time. The folks buying the books are training A.I. language models. They are training them by cutting the bindings off the books, scanning them in, feeding them to the A.I. model and then destroying the books. I love books. I have a nice library at our cabin and quite a few here at the beach. This seems concerning to me. Once all the books are destroyed you can easily change digital content to change history and change the narrative. There is a reason that totalitarian regimes have book burnings. Our history is being digitized. Easily manipulated when the time comes

When civilization collapses, and it will one or the other, its going to be a tough go with no books.

But; they only need one copy of each? So the rest will still be in circulation.

This news is not really news at all. Well.... As long as the professional worry warts of ALDeer aren't concerned, then I guess I shouldn't be concerned either. Thanks guys for making me feel better about the future of the World. I'll go back to riding my tricycle, cooking and having a good time here at the beach.

Tom hanks made a movie where he did books that way. He was teaching an ai brain for a robot companion. I thought it was a good movie.

A co-worker of mine built his own LLM (at home) and imported all of the code functions (events) of the application that he supported, including configuration notes to assist him in his job. He has pretty much eliminated his job.

It's occured to me a few times recently I need to build a better collection of self sufficient / survival skill books. Farming. Animal husbandry, etc.
Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

But; they only need one copy of each? So the rest will still be in circulation. Right. This is one of those headlines that sounds scary and ominous until you actually think about the logistics of it The key words are rare and hard to find. That math fails when public supply is already near zero. The book Fahrenheit 451 comes to mind.

Even "rare and hard to find" might mean only a 100, or 1000, or 10,000 in existence in collectable books. Not one or few. I have rare turkey hunting book probably worth $1000; but it ain't the last one.

Even if there are 10,000 copies in existence worldwide, that would mean only a few copies in each region available for purchase. Once those copies are gone, then everyone else in that region is SOL. Once the physical copies are gone, you have to rely on digital copies that can be manipulated.

You think "historical" printed books can't be manipulated over decades; or hundreds of years?
