They've become more attractive to buyers in the past few years because the wait times for getting them cleared by the ATF has gone from 9-18 months to under two weeks in most cases, and under a month in almost all cases. They got even more popular when folks began saving $200 on not having to buy tax stamps. Their popularity is going to go through the roof if this non-NFA item thing sticks.

But, the 4 points that UncleHuck stated above are facts...there is less recoil, there is less muzzle blast, there is less sound, and there is less muzzle rise...all of which enhance accuracy.

Can point of impact change from shooting unsuppressed to shooting suppressed on the same rifle? Sure. But, most suppressed shooters don't ever plan on shooting unsupressed again. My rifles that I shoot suppressed are all "set and forget", and I've not experienced ANY of them getting less accurate when adding a suppressor...only more accurate, due to the reasons UH stated above.

That said....buy one, or don't buy one. Everyone has their reasons.


I’ve got one for a 22 love it. You can hear the firing pin. Sounds like a BB gun. I don’t have issue with them honestly. I think they should be over the counter and if you like em buy em and shoot em. I can’t disagree with the above points. But they don’t negate the need for protection for multiple shots like a range day. And for the casual shooter that may shoot a couple deer a year, shooting unsuppressed without hearing protection will not move the needle for a person’s hearing. The very people that claim hearing protection probably cut grass without protection. They probably do a lot of activities that are bad for hearing. If you like em say they’re cool and I like em but they are not the cure to cancer and they are not practical for 99% of hunters we just don’t shoot enough. I’ve shot a bunch of em. Just another cool factor
