What’s the point of suppression if it’s still loud. To shoot one deer you do not need a suppressor or hearing protection and if I’m going to be shooting multiple rounds I’ll wear muffs or ear plugs. A 22 sound is still damaging to ears. Reducing a 30 caliber sound to a 22 still requires hearing protection over a bunch of rounds. So that 1000 suppressor accomplishes nothing. It’s a fad

Also they can affect accuracy. I know 2 separate guys that had rifles that pre suppressor shot lights out. One was a sako the other a bergara. Slap a suppressor on the end and the rifles went from 0.5 moa to 2 moa. Take suppressor off they shot again. Yeah I realize they can try different ammo or develop a new load but they can also just use $0.25 ear plugs.

The only one I’ve ever seen that is what I call Hollywood quite is a 300 blackout running subsonic. My 300 win mad sounds like a 22 and my 6.5 sounds like a 17 hmr. I’ll take that reduction everyday. When you kill your first deer in the woods and ridges is where you can truly notice the difference

I want one because my property is only 40 acres. There are houses around. It's safe to shoot, but i sit near property lines and shoot into my land. Because of this, I'm fairly close to houses and want it as quite as possible to shoot in the AM.

Get some real world experience with quality suppressors and you will realize both of your above statements were complete fallacy.

I’ve shot a bunch of em got a friend who’s probably got a dozen. From a 22 to some kinda 416 barret or something like that. Dead air silencerco etc.. shot a bunch of them. They’re a fad. They provide no practical advantage hunting

Saying suppressors are a fad is quite comical considering that they are approaching 120 years old…that’s a long running fad.

It’s in the name of the device. Sound suppression….and not for “them” in the area nor the animals. Personal auditory easement without the need for intrusive ear plugs.

Yet the suppressor still don’t make rifles hearing safe. Most still recommend hearing protection. Intrusive ear plugs do make rifles hearing safe. Yes been around 120 years but have become must haves in the last 5

Suppressor advantages -
reduces recoil
reduces muzzle blast
reduces sound
reduces muzzle rise, allowing for multiple shots (hogs)

Disadvantages
adds weight
adds length

We have threaded almost every rifle that we own. Personally, I won't hunt without one if I have the option.

And they absolutely are hearing safe for one shot out of a blind. Killed a deer a few years back. Had to wait for his buddy to realize something was wrong and leave the field. My friend hunting about 150 yards away heard me shoot, but the guy 150 yards past him did not.

On a 22, they are movie quiet.

They've become more attractive to buyers in the past few years because the wait times for getting them cleared by the ATF has gone from 9-18 months to under two weeks in most cases, and under a month in almost all cases. They got even more popular when folks began saving $200 on not having to buy tax stamps. Their popularity is going to go through the roof if this non-NFA item thing sticks.

But, the 4 points that UncleHuck stated above are facts...there is less recoil, there is less muzzle blast, there is less sound, and there is less muzzle rise...all of which enhance accuracy.

Can point of impact change from shooting unsuppressed to shooting suppressed on the same rifle? Sure. But, most suppressed shooters don't ever plan on shooting unsupressed again. My rifles that I shoot suppressed are all "set and forget", and I've not experienced ANY of them getting less accurate when adding a suppressor...only more accurate, due to the reasons UH stated above.

That said....buy one, or don't buy one. Everyone has their reasons.

I’ve got one for a 22 love it. You can hear the firing pin. Sounds like a BB gun. I don’t have issue with them honestly. I think they should be over the counter and if you like em buy em and shoot em. I can’t disagree with the above points. But they don’t negate the need for protection for multiple shots like a range day. And for the casual shooter that may shoot a couple deer a year, shooting unsuppressed without hearing protection will not move the needle for a person’s hearing. The very people that claim hearing protection probably cut grass without protection. They probably do a lot of activities that are bad for hearing. If you like em say they’re cool and I like em but they are not the cure to cancer and they are not practical for 99% of hunters we just don’t shoot enough. I’ve shot a bunch of em. Just another cool factor

Exactly. NOT a fad. The short wait period that occurred a couple years ago is what finally got me to buy one. After using it, I realized I had been an idot for not getting one sooner.

Uncle Huck is correct on everything he said. Yes, its still loud with full loads, but suppressors do make a big difference in the decibels, but if shooting subsonic rounds the sound is so low you can hear the bullet hit a paper target at 50 yards.

From now on, every new rifle I get will be set up for suppression.
