I collect felt western hats. I have 5 - 6 Stetson's and last week I contracted Wild Hats out of Louisville, KY to do a custom build for me.
Overland,
I'd go to Boot Barn or Cavender's around B'ham and see what you can find. Those cheap Justins that Outback mentioned from Tractor Supply are plentiful. Wish you hadnt posted this. Its probably gonna cost me!! I’m getting a western style dress fedora. Front fold (tres deuce), slight pencil curl brim pulled down in the front. Hatband will be cherry gator skin. ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/9M4yFJY4/IMG-7963.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/Gt2V20Sy/IMG-7964.jpg)

Once you get a custom felt hat made, you won’t buy another one off the shelf. A few years ago I ordered a custom from O’Farrell’s out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. It’s the Longmire, and an exact replica of the one from the show. They were the ones that made the actual ones worn on the series. They mailed me a kit to correctly get the shape and measurements of my head. Took about 6 months after the ordered was made before I received it and it fit like a glove. About two years later I ordered a second hat from them. Still had my info on file from the first one. Received it about 6 months later and it fit like a glove also. Only downside to ordering a custom from a really good hat maker is the turnaround time can be months.
Seen a lot of videos on Facebook from Wild Hats. What kind of turn around did they have, BC? Like the looks of their work, but if I ordered one from them it wouldn’t have that damn gold nail in the hat. Maybe on the headband, but definitely not in the hat.

Not for certain but I've heard they won't sell without the gold nail. Not sure if they will work with you on placement or not.

I just can’t see spending that much on a good felt hat and having 2 holes poked in it. Looks like they’re around 6 months out also.

I just figured it would be part of the experience. There were some guys on the Facebook page discussing it and one was flat out told "No nail, no hat" but he wanted to cut the nail out altogether. I've been on the phone with them several times and they are super nice people. I guess if you are buying a 1K hat from them they would tend to be nice. My original fitting was March 28'th but they slid me up nearly two months because of a non payment made on a hat. They are probably more like 8 months out. There's a Facebook page called Wild Hats Enthusiasts if you just like to look at hats and get info.
