How do y'all do it. What is your ideal kill weight? Do you go to straight corn later? I got 1 at about 200 lbs. right now. Backwards cowboy I know you have experience in this so your ideas would be appreciated . Got another 1 a little smaller I may kill also

In my experience 300# is the sweet spot. After that they are growing head and fat. 5 bag of crack corn to 1 bag soybean meal is what I feed.

300# is what i shoot for. Dont switch to straight corn, ive done that, itll take foever to get there. I buy my feed from a local feed producer, so i dont know exact ratio. Bit it ground corn, soybean meal, and a hog vitamin pack. I like it because i know whats in it and it works. Most feed companies make a starter and finisher ration also. What kind of pigs are they?

The guy I bought them from said they were Yorkshire and Poland china cross. Got them first of April at 40 a piece. Been feeding regular feed and they will go 200 now. I got 2 pounds of sausage left from that one I killed the first of the year . It was about 75 pounds and was given to me because the guy had tried everything and it would not gain any more. I wormed it and kept it a month feeding it and it did not gain anything hardly. It was all lean meat and some of the best I ever smoked. Did not get much lard off it.

When i started, i thought you could feed one out like a cow. I kept adding corn and adding corn to my feed. They wouldnt gain. They were eating it just not gaining. Called the guy i bought them from and he said why you feeding all that corn, thats all you can afford? I said no, i want them fat. Long story short, that wont work. They gotta have soymeal, and they really need the vitiaman pack. If you feed them a good ration, you should have a 300# hog at 6 months. Hogs are funny, you cant just throw them out there and feed them scrapes, if you want quality meat. Im pretty sure i did a few youtube videos on it. If you want to discuss it depth shoot me a pm and ill call you. If i can help any way, let me know. And before anyone gets mad, there arw a bunch of ways to feed out a hog that will work.theyre just not very efficient

I looked at a buddy's place that had a heck of a setup with a coolbot. I may build me one but I imagine I would have as many friends as if I had won the lottery. I am shore not wanting to get in the deer cutting business. Between my friends and family I cut more than I want now. He had them harbor freight lifts with remotes in the cooler and the skinning room. That is the way to go no bear hugging . I killed a buck last year that I gave to my brother. It field dresses 176. We took it to the cooler and had to leave it in the floor. He is in worse shape than I am

This is an interesting thread
It’s been a long thread me since I’ve heard anyone speak about finishing out a hog
Heck it’s been a long time since I’ve been to a hog killin
Those were some good times back then

Yes they were!! It was a family weekend. We would do 5-6 hogs a weekend at our house and then we’d go to other family and or friends houses and help them on other weekends. I keep threatening to raise a hog for the family but right now I’m not set up for it. Hopefully this winter I can build a nice hog pen. I miss the old ways of living.
