We got a few on the other big kind around here. I hear them way more than I see them Pileated aka the Indian hen. I've had those things about scare me out of a ladder stand when they would start calling above my head in the same tree. I’ve never had a gobbler hammer to one. You’d think one would

I’ve been chasing for 30 plus years and never had one gobble to a pileated Indian bird. Literally have had birds standing in site and one fly between and do his thing. Nothing!!
Another guy I know says he’s heard them but rarely.
Our birds used to hammer all morning long. Kinda like those crazy rios. Not no more. The rock quarry would drop a load into the crusher and birds far and wide would hammer. They ignore those sounds now as well.
Someday they gobble, some days they don’t.

Strangest gobble I heard was when the guy on a garbage truck on the highway threw the metal can back in the yard.

I had one gobble this year to a loud woodpecker knock, just assuming it was a pileated.

I hunt a place that they will gobble at the sawmill horn blowing in the morning, like clock work. Every time I’m sure proud I’m not in that sawmill anymore. Heck at one point the state was paying $300 for every dead tree that a pileated woodpecker could live in
