I've never replaced a vehicle ECM but I'm thinking of doing so on a 2005 Buick LaCrosse that belongs to my son's girlfriend. The car is in overall great condition and has been diagnosed as dead ECM. I've researched some and found that a pre flashed unit based on the VIN number appears to be the way to go.

So, I need input from anybody who has done this. Am I going to need an expensive scan tool for whatever reason? I have a petty basic unit already. Any other info including if it's even worthwhile to do this. And FWIW, I can get an ECM with lifetime warranty for less than $300

I might be wrong but that should be plug and play easy peasy.

And, yes, I have done my Youtube research. Just wondering if there's something that I could gain from personal experience on here.

I’ve replaced a TCM and it had to calibrated.
Luckily I have a friend with the necessary proprietary software which did that for me.

I hate making a good first impression. There’s no way I can keep that shit up.

If it’s pre flashed, it should be plug and play.

I replaced an Injector Control Module on my Excursion. Put it in, and fire it up.
