Ever since I took Geoff Hill's Ornithology class at Auburn almost 20 years ago, I've held out hope. With the technological advances over that time, I'd think they'd have definitive evidence. Still a mystery.

Personally, I don't think they do but hope they do. With the technology available today, and all the public and private research grants that have been doled out in the last 20 years, one of these things likely has happened:
- they're extinct but folks still are looking in the big tracts
- they exist, and researchers have STFU about it to study and minimize disturbances
- "believed to exist" so the research goes on

We got a few on the other big kind around here. I hear them way more than I see them Pileated aka the Indian hen. Have quite a few of them around my house. Live in the creek bottom behind my house.
