Looking for some recommendations on a gas powered earth auger. Main uses is digging holes for shooting houses, t posts for fencing, and 4x4s for a couple of new gates.

Never had an auger before but prefer something reliable that doesn’t use batteries and doesn’t hook up to a PTO on a tractor.

Thanks!

My neighbor loaned me one that he bought from Harbor Freight. It powered through dirt just fine. But I discovered my land is nothing but 1/2 fist to fist sized rock covered with a veneer of dirt. I had to use a metal rod and mini sledge to pound rocks out of the walls of the holes a lot to be able to continue digging. 2 deep holes for a trellis and 2 shallow holes for muscadine and 4 shallow holes for blueberries and I had 1.5 5 gallon buckets of stones.

So yeah, if the ground isn’t rocky they work great. But if it is, it’s still a ton of labor

I have the harbor freight one as well. Does pretty good. Loaned to my neighbor and he's used it more than I for fence posts. It's easier with two, but doable with one.

Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

I have the harbor freight one too. It has been flawless so far after two years of moderate use. I use it to plant trees more than anything else.

Only a half dozen times in the past forty years I’ve had enough holes to dig to justify using an auger. Certain things are better to rent than own in my opinion. The one that Blue Rents has is a two person beast with an assortment of bit sizes. Just remember to get one size larger bit than the post your setting. 6” posts, 8” bit.
