Wife and I got to slip away for a kid free trip down to Santa Rosa Beach this weekend with some family/friends. I've been trying to get my buddy a little more into saltwater fishing so we gave it a go while we were down there. Got rained out Saturday morning and the surf was extremely rough all weekend so we got up at 5 Sunday morning and ran down to Okaloosa Island pier. Started out throwing spoons and gotchas trying to get on some spanish but that only resulted in a few ladyfish so we dropped a sabiki and pulled up a few baits. Tried them live and freelined for a bit with no luck so we dropped a couple to the bottom and were both hooked up not long after. He'd never caught or even seen a redfish before so he was pretty amped up, both were just over slot so we couldn't keep them but they made the trip well worth it. I wish we could have stayed and caught more but we had to run shortly after landing them due to thunderstorms setting in.

Redfish are fun. Growing up, we used to wear em out with live shrimp and a bobber at night.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

That looks like fun. I haven’t fished off a pier in years.

Heck yeah. Reds are my favorite fish, both to fish for and to eat. It’s amazing how much harder they fight than a comparable size bass. I still love bass fishing, don’t get me wrong. But for me, getting into redfish did the same thing to bass fishing that getting into turkey hunting did to deer hunting. Deer hunting and bass fishing just don’t quite scratch the itch the way they used to.

And if you ever get the slightest inkling that redfish (or even bass for that matter) may not excite you quite as much as they used to, pick a fly rod and start over

Chasing tailing and belly-crawling redfish with a fly rod is the fishing equivalent of a spot & stalk bow hunt. It’s up close and personal
