I was talking to another coach from around Montgomery yesterday. A public school assistant coach. He made a good point. I’ll share it with you Tdog. Since you brought up Thomasville High School and Mobile Christian I’ll use them as an example.

In 2023 (according to Gemini pro AI) here is what each school received for their “per pupil expenditure”)

Thomasville High School : $14,502
Mobile Christian High School: $8,200

Number of players not paying tuition on the football team:

Thomasville: 100%
Mobile Christian: 14% (that is estimated. I knew of most of their players over the years. Probably close to 3/35 on the team. I used the number 5/35 on the team to be on the high side. Even if that number is much higher, it’s nowhere near 100% like Thomasville)

Both teams have to follow the same set of AHSAA rules except Mobile Christian is penalized by competitive balance and the 1.3 multiplier.


So why is Thomasville at a disadvantage? They have nearly twice the money per student mobile Christian has and All their Football players are on scholarship. Is it just their location that puts them at a disadvantage? So we are going to penalize Mobile Christian because of the location of their campus?

Someone make it make sense to me.

How big is Mobile Christians school district?

Both schools have the option to let anyone they want attend their school if they want. No matter where they live. As long as they follow the AHSAA transfer rules. If I’m not mistaken, Thomasville City Schools charges families $400 per year per student for students that live outside of their school district. And a lot of a schools, I’m not sure if Thomasville does this or not, have the option to waive that fee. Hmmmm… players can pay to go to school there to play football? Sounds an awful lot like a private school/ public school hybrid doesn’t it? But the multiplier or competitive balance rule doesn’t apply to them.

If 20 kids move in to Thomasville's school district and go to enroll. Is there any chance that Thomasville tells them "sorry, we're not accepting anymore students"?

You’ve made that point to me when we’ve talked about this before. And I understand your point. Explain to me how you feel this is a disadvantage that warrants what is happening in the AHSAA? This is why we have classifications. Schools of the same size play schools of the same size. If MC chooses to limit enrollment, they still play schools that are their size (really they have to play 1 classification up do to the multiplier, maybe more if they win a state title) I guess what I’m saying is, how is it unfair that a school chooses not to grow?

One person argues “It’s just little ole Thomasville AL we have no way to attract students to our school”

Another person argues “if students try to come to Thomasville, we can’t turn them away”

Which one is the problem? It can’t be both. Or maybe it can be, explain it to me.

My analogy of the sec joining the acc was a good one. The acc would hate it. Tville is on 43 - all those schools are low budget. The coach told me today - they had just enough jersey for our last player. Pwyse - this conversation was over for me. Sit in the stand where we were sitting and see just about every college player mobile had and all anounced as joining as 9th graders - it would appear they were bought. I am sure they were not!!

Look at -‘drum up or do what ever u want to do on $$ - Tville barely has enough money for jerseys this year! Coach told me that before I looked back at this silly thread! Fact - coach told me that today! Mobile area has lot more $$ than we ever will have and we never asked or wanted any new private schools coming into our league. What I meant by 43 cause if u ain’t been there - you want know. No school that is considered to be on hwy 43 will ever be thought of as having money! Go to Jackson - Leroy - or other 43 achools - screams no $$. Say that crazy crap about some of them school and after they thru laughing at u - they prob want to slap crap out of u cause it is an inaccurate statement

All the private schools are always dressed way better- not jealous - but goes along with the $ statement. Private school fancy - easy to notice - 43 not! Go in Jackson stadium it may scare u a little - only thing u will be hoping is u don’t get robbed - nobody in right mind will be thinking 43 got $$. We got what we got - each other - always been like that - got no special players coming in recruited or otherwise

Leroy squeaks in under your 20 year threshold in baseball, barely. Winning it in 2007 & 2008. They have made it to the finals several times after that including recently.

It’s public record. You can look it up and see how much money per student it is. So I would be willing to bet that the administration costs at Thomasville is quite a lot more than MC. So it looks a lot more poorer than it is. A lot of money being wasted is what I would bet. You have to remember that MC gets zero tax money from any businesses. But keep saying what you are saying instead of researching it and looking at the numbers. There is a lot of hands in the cookie jar it would seem.

I think Leroy was 2A at that time. He was speaking specifically about 3A only.

My point makes perfect sense. You just seem to be having trouble understanding it. Kind of the same way that you had trouble understanding that Thomasville was not the second public school in the last 22 years to win a 3a baseball state championship.

If you don’t understand that the so called disparity just boils down to choices that some of the public school systems make them you don’t want to see it. Have yall been to orange beach high school? Seen their facilities? Their money? They are in 5A this year and their area is every 5A county school in mobile county. Citronelle, vigor, leflore,BC Rain, Williamson. Yall think getting the private schools out of the way will fix your problems but it won’t. It’s a haves vs the have nots problem. County school systems are poor because they are grossly mismanaged. They are extremely top heavy. Like a business with way too many chiefs. Orange beach high schools compare gets about $15k per student and Mobile county schools get about 13,500. Look at those two schools and see if there is more than a million dollar difference in them. Absolutely there is. It’s ran better.

Long overdue . Madison Academy used to dominate just about every sport in NA . They've fell off the last few years but there was a time only the big 6A schools would give them any real competition and in some sports they couldn't handle them.

That’s a great point. MA is better at sports so get rid of them so the teams that aren’t as good can win some.
