How long have flock cameras been around and why just now is it a thing?a They have been around since 2018, but back then they were only license plate readers without AI profiling. They originally sold most of them to HOAs and private businesses, which created a nationwide surveillance grid that law enforcement now takes advantage of. The system upgraded to continuous live streams in 2023, real-time pedestrian tracking in 2024, and automated drone deployment in 2025. Supposedly there are between 80,000 and 100,000 in operation in the US
