So our house build is coming along very smoothly. We should be all dried in by this weekend. Starting sheetrock this week. On track to be in by end of the year. Every sub we’ve had has just been remarkable and so skilled. All have been Mexican/Latino (except the guy who did the spray foam insulation and the HVAC) and I’m just in awe how folks can look at a picture or a set of plans and turn it into a home. Not a single one I’ve come in contact with (framers, concrete, roofers, etc.) speaks English. At best it’s very broken with a heavy Mexican accent.

Our bricks arrived last week and they started laying them yesterday. Man, that is like art in motion. Those guys were like a well oiled machine stacking and leveling and everything. So I’m standing there watching them and admiring their work and a young Mexican guy (prob in his 20’s) is standing there and I said “Muy Bruno!” as I’m pointing to them working. He looked at me and said “Yes. This is looking really good. I’ve never seen this color brick. It’s beautiful!” in PERFECT English and with as much Mexican accent as I have. I was stunned! He just smiled and got back to work.

It just struck me as funny as heck that 1) I did not expect to hear any English from him and 2) without a hint of accent! 😂

I work with a guy that's from Hispanic descent but was born and raised in the good Ole USA. He went into a bank a little while back and the teller started speaking Spanish to him. He had to tell her in his perfect English that he doesn't understand and she'd have to speak English. He said that she was embarrassed so bad that she looked like she wanted to crawl under the counter.

I have a friend that has mostly Italian ancestry. I've been with him in a Mexican restaurant and watched a waitress walk up to him and start speaking in Spanish. He just looks at them and says "NO..... Italiano!!!". It really ticks him off which makes it all the more funny to me. grin

My wife is of Italian descent - I couldn’t tell you how many times she has been asked if her family is from Mexico.

They only speak Spanish when they’re making fun of us, like the Hindus at the service station

I’m in also in the middle of building a house. Usually there is one guy in the crew that is the designated “speaks English” guy. If you ask one of the crew a question, they automatically point to the “speak English” guy as broken as it may be.

On my last house build, the tile guys had built one of the soap inlays in the shower way too high. Instead of measuring the distance from the floor, they measured the distance from the bottom of the tub. The guy didn’t speak any English and I was getting a little hot. Finally, I had to call one of my wife’s best friends who taught high school Spanish for 30 years and hand him the phone. Finally got the message across and they fixed it.

My daughter has a friend whose parents immigrated legally from Guatemala. Once here they learned English and have only spoken English since she was born. She had to take Spanish in school to learn it. Has a great southern accent.

They get asked less about immigration documents if they don't talk in English. Lot are capable just works a lot better for them, less questions.
