People say we want simple trucks. And I'm sure there's a small segment of folks that do, but the reason we have the trucks for sale on the dealer lots that we have is because of consumer demand.
There was a time when a truck was exactly that... A truck. Something to work out of: No A/C, roll up windows, manual transmission, vinyl bench seat, etc... but then men who used trucks everyday for their work wanted more creature comforts like air conditioning, cruise control, leather seats, back seats, better fuel economy, more horsepower, etc... People wanted a truck that could still haul stuff, but a truck they could also load up with luggage, chairs, umbrellas, and boogie boards and drive 8 hours to the beach and take the whole family.
This is why we have the trucks we have today. The automobile companies didn't force these trucks down our throats, they gave us what we wanted, because they are just trying to sell trucks and make money.
It's our fault and we should own it.
The last time automobile companies tried to force something down our throats was electric cars. That isn't working out so well for them. All three legacy American car companies are pivoting away from expensive electric cars and trucks, because they are not making money on them.
Probably the cheapest, simplest, most basic trucks you can buy now would be a 2WD base Nissan Frontier or a Toyota Tacoma. Of those two I would opt for the base Nissan, because it's the last mid-sized truck with a naturally sspirated V6. But even that is going to set you back over $33k brand new.

The most old school truck I have now is a 2004 Toyota Tacoma extra cab This thing has the 3.4L v6 a 5 speed manual transmission with standard J-shift transfer case for 4WD It has manual roll up windows and manual cloth seats The AC doesn’t work currently but I’m working on it At 198k miles it’s kind of refreshing to drive this thing and it’s pretty quick to get up to driving speed with that big v6 and light body

hunting truck is my dads 04 f150 v8 4x4, peasant model and still kicking with 320k
i have a 05 v8 4runner 4x4 with 270k for my “daily” which gets driven a 2-3x a week. my work truck has a bluetooth radio that makes it convenient to listen to music/podcasts. after owning the 4runner 3 years, i finally spent the money to put a radio in it with apple play. it randomly plays just the treble of music , and others just the bass notes and u can only hear part of anyone speaking or singing. i’ve take. it back twice and it still isn’t right. abt ready to tell them to out the factory radio back in it. that’s what i get trying to make it “fancy”

I've had a lot of trucks over the years.....Chevys, a Ford, Dodges, and the just RAMs (sans Dodge). Probably the "simplest" would be my Dad's 1972 Chevrolet C10 Custom, 350 V8 auto, power brakes and no power anything else, an AM radio. Still got it, I'll get it going again some day. Next up would be a 1979 Chevy K10 Scottsdale Camper Special, 350 V8 manual 4sp, its got power brakes AND power steering, and power nothing else, oh its AM/FM radio (fancy!). Still got that one, too. Next would be a 1986 Chevrolet K10 Silverado, 305 V8 auto (last of the carburetors, throttle body injection for Chevy in 1987 and on), it had power everything,.......and man do I wish I still had it!! After that, none of them were what I would call "simple" trucks, they got progressively more complicated.
