The United States, alongside the United Kingdom, overthrew Iran's democratically elected government in August 1953 through a covert operation codenamed Operation Ajax. The CIA-backed coup removed Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and solidified the absolute rule of the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. That's where the problems we currently have with Iran started.

Had we handled that differently there is a strong case to be made that Iran would not be the Islamic Fundamentalist country they are today and would probably be our greatest ally in the middle east and perhaps not Israel.
