I hope my simple truck last my lifetime. 97 Tacoma. Single Cab 5 speed 4x4. Mostly cold AC and still plays cassette tapes

Its got 367,000 miles on it (with a few electrical gremlins) but otherwise runs great. I did replace the engine with a deleted 5.3L back in 2015. I change all my transmission and transfer case fluids every 100k and add Lucas Stabilizer. The key to vehicle life is removing all of the EPA garbage, or as much as possible, and regular maintenance. Those check engine lights are just decorative on my trucks, they’re ignored.

Picked one (08) up recently from n Ol' feller (extended cab z71) only had around 195k it's been dod deleted, mild cam, and some other goodies, she'll definitely giddy up n go now 😄

They are expensive to maintain. Sending the brake combination valve off my 77 F150 for a complete rebuild. Folks that do niche work that isn't done anymore can name their price. On the upside they are typically top notch. If all the other brake parts are gonna be new, no sense in not servicing the brains of the system. After 49 years it was probably due.

I enjoy the comfort of my new truck, but also love the quarter windows open, windows down, and the smell of raw exhaust.

Real mechanics are a dying breed literally. There’s very few who can or will fix something anymore. They just replace disposable parts nowadays. I took a standadyne DB4 fuel pump to Bama Fuel Injection recently. They rebuilt it for me (about 1/2 the cost of a factory reman) but those places are becoming more rare. As the older guys retire or die nobody is there to fill their shoes.

Exactly. When he said the price and said it will be 100% when I'm done, and I'll stand behind it forever. You have a problem, send it back and let's us know what's going on, we will fix it. I've honestly found more specialty shops in the back of Mustang Club of America and Hemmings magazines than online. Those guys been doing it so long they don't know what the hell facebook and social media is.

Only three vehicles I've had that I truly wish I had never gotten rid of.

68 Mustang Coupe with the 289HP. It had a bench seat and a peddle by the dimmer switch that would cycle the wipers. Chick's all wanted a ride in it.

84 full size Bronco with a 351W and a low geared transmission. It was a gas hog but a fun ride.

And an 08 long bed Tacoma with a 4.0. Don't have to say anymore about that one.

FJ40 or old Land Cruiser.

Always liked the old 84 f150 with a 351 Cleveland. We had one as a work truck way back then
The dump truck was in the shop so we towed a care 580 back Joe form Madison back to the shoals. She backfired up thru the carburetor and blew off the air comfort and hood was dented up. Literally pulled I where we were going and shut it down, boom.
It tied back up after we lay is sit for a few.

Uhm, not sure. When I was 16 working at a garage and doing such things as changing valve cover gaskets and such, I remember those covers caked inside with shit. And there was rubber hoses after rubber hoses connected to everything. Electronics has always been better to me than vacuum.

All the BS emissions from that era. All they knew back then was lower compression ratios, retard the hell out of camshaft timing, and put a complex series of vacuum lines and modulators to make it pass a sniff test.

There were some reels in FB mentioning the big 3 were developing bigger motors to increases hp and torque while helping with mpgs. Also longevity of the motors with more displacement and lower compression. A lot of mechanics are saying nothing really has changed for trucks in the mpgs category but reliability has taken a backseat. How many sensors are on a motor now.
Like mentioned you can buy an older truck but it’s gonna cost.

At this point I would settle with them just putting a switch on the Auto-Off function. Damn it pisses me off.

That’s pretty much the going rate for good condition square bodies.
My 84 was exactly the same color as that 80. I sold it for a little more than that price.

This right here. They are expensive to maintain and the main reason I sold mine.
Plus it only got 10-11 mpg at any speed.
Yes it was a blast to drive but just became too difficult ( for a 72 year old) and expensive to maintain

There’s a place in Texas that will buy and restore older pick ups from the 70s to early 80s. Not quite a frame off restoration but pretty darn close. Then they turn around and sell them sometimes they will have even a new motor in them. Rebuilt at a very minimum. Their costs are actually reasonable considering what you’re getting with the amount of work that’s gone into them. Usually in the high 30s to mid 40s. Still high compared to what the original costs were half the price of new trucks. If I were to ever have to buy another truck, that’s exactly what I would buy if it was going to be “new”
