opinions/experiences welcomed … we’d bought a Patriot SG80 only a couple years ago & it crapped the bed yesterday - tore it apart & the 6v battery is good - opened it up & we reckon ants caused it to short out (best we can figure) - these are considered disposable so there’s no way to fix them - $165 shot in the rear end

so for now we revived our old American Farm Works charger (had a broken T post mounting bracket) & it’s running our fence

let me know what’s worked well long term - we’re going to need another next year when we garden in a back pasture

I built my fence recently and after debating and deliberating, I bought a Speedrite 1000 1 joule charger, a 30W solar panel from Amazon, and a $70 deep cycle solar battery from Harbor Freight. I came out better than a comparable Gal, and the individual components can be replaced easily.

I started with a 10w trickle charger and it worked fine, but then we had a long string of heavy overcast/rainy days and it struggled. With the 30W, the battery stays maxed.

Another thing I like about this setup is it lets me have my charger and battery under the nearby structure, and out of the sun and the rain. Only the solar panel is exposed. The 1 joule really packs a wallop.

This might be overkill for some but I did a 10ksqft area with a 3D deer fence and it’s working very well. Nothing that touches it has dared touch it a second time.

thanks for the reply - i like this setup for our horse pasture & barn & probably will do something like that
for our remote area where we plan to garden we’ll need an all-in-one solution
