That's been the SOP for years both for a semblance of continuity and deference to the widow/widower. Y'all don't let your hatred of the gov't outweigh the way it has been for many, many years for practical reasons. Let her finish his term and then the people of SC can choose who they want in that seat.

Actually it was done just two short years ago. Hunter and Jill stepped in, behind the puppet president, and made all of Joes presidential decisions there at the end of his presidential term. Truthfully, they probably made them all from the first day he took office.
