Actually, it's probably a smart move based on an article I saw yesterday. Pretty much all the people planning on running for his vacated seat, all hold current positions within SC's govt or are already in the house of reps representing SC. They have to declare for the special primary on by July 21. Primary is held and that basically leaves them just weeks to campaign against the dem nominee. If they are having to show up in the senate to vote all week, none will have much opportunity to campaign for the primary or the general election against the democrat nominee. To me it makes sense to have someone outside of existing govt, take the seat for the next 100 days so that the rest can fight it out. She's going to vote how she's told to vote anyway. Just like Lindsay was.

Yup. Our government has turned into a damn clown show. Why that statement? Has been very common for year for a family member to fill a short term left for a senator or rep who dies duirng their term. Today, U.S. Senate vacancies are governed by the 17th Amendment. In 46 states, the governor is granted the power to appoint a temporary replacement senator until a special election can be held, while four states (Kentucky, North Dakota, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin) require the seat to be filled strictly by a special election. It was once common historically—often referred to as "widow's succession" where wives or other family members were appointed as placeholders after the senator died.

That's been the SOP for years both for a semblance of continuity and deference to the widow/widower. Y'all don't let your hatred of the gov't outweigh the way it has been for many, many years for practical reasons. Let her finish his term and then the people of SC can choose who they want in that seat.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Have the expense of a special election for someone to sit for maybe a couple of months?

Jawbone your right again, simply a traditional appointment and has been done a lot over the course of our country’s history. Let the sister vote the party leaders line and then let the South Carolina voters decide. Oh and by the way jawbone you can pm me and come hunt with me on opening day of dove season if would like too. It would not be that far from your new abode and you might see people from Selma.

"widow's succession"
We took a turn for the worse when we started letting women into politics I saw this happen at TVA in the late '90s but she wasn't even widowed. A knee grow man, data tech at TVA, was abusing one of his daughters and got sent oft to prison for it. TVA brings his no count wife in to replace him. I doubt she knew her ABCs/could count to 3. Some days she'd have her teeth in AND bra on. Other days.... She was there for a few years after I left.

Hunter and Jill stepped in, behind the puppet president, and made all of Joes presidential decisions there at the end of his presidential term. Truthfully, they probably made them all from the first day he took office.
