It is pretty easy to tell. Fawns are fairly naive and get hit by cars often. Started seeing them in NW Alabama a few weeks ago.

Dallas county- Late Jan rut- heats up the 16th or so and runs till the end of the season
I'd say about 60% drop the last two weeks of August. Start seeing them on camera every year pretty heavy August 24-28
Another 20% the first two weeks of August. Got the first pic of a fawn on the farm in Selma a couple days ago
Remaining 20% labor day or so.
Fawns extremely common in bow season. bout shouldn't even really shoot does till early november down there
Hale county- shift that entire timeframe forward about a month
Jefferson county- shift that entire timeframe forward about 2 months
Nowhere in this state are there NOT rutting bucks in January. Besides maybe pockets in Bankhead.

My girls are still looking like swollen ticks in Monroe county.
I feel like 209 days is what I’ve read. Our rut is generally hot the last week of January into the first of February. My girls always disappear mid August and show up mid September with the first fawns. This last season I had fawns born in August, September and October.
So the answer to the original question is, concisely, about 200 days from conception. And that is a moving target not just around the state but also within a population.

North Washington County- usually late August-September but my neighbor found a dead one by the lake 3 weeks ago. Said it weighed probably 6-8 lbs. Really early so may have been born premature.

6-8 lbs is not premature. Twins usually 4.5-6, singles 6-8.
One thing y’all all need to keep in mind is fawns are generally 3-4 weeks old before you start seeing them up with mom, on camera, getting run over etc. Also, they drop on a bell curve, just like the rut. You’ll have a few outliers early, leading up to peak with the most, the trailing off to the last few stragglers.

Matt, I’m aware that in the best habitat and herd conditions a percentage of doe fawns will attain enough size to breed as a fawn. At what percentage would you say this happens across most of Alabama? Less than 5%?

With our rut timing it’s basically statistically insignificant. I’ve seen it occur in a handful of places with early October/November ruts, and even then it’s a low percentage.

This one was laying in the middle of a dirt road under the shade of an oak tree today in Evergreen. It had a wound that was starting to heal on its back end and I could see some scratches around the back legs like something tried to grab it and it got away. Start seeing them in Lauderdale in late June through early July. Same in Tennessee.
