I’m looking at a tuna trip out to the oil rigs in November. This will be my fourth attempt. The first time got canceled due to high winds. 2nd time we went out but we were one day before a hurricane and just couldn’t make the run. We did catch a pile of vermillion and came right back. 3rd time trip was canceled due to weather again. I’ve tried once a tithe last 3 years. This year we are trying in November, but I don’t know what weather temps to expect. Anyone ever been to Petronius, ram Powell, or Appomattox in November? Looks like it will be the opening weekend of deer season so fingers crossed the Tuna trip actually works out this time.

As you know, a weather window in November can be tough. With that said, the tuna will be there, but live bait can be a little tough that time of year. Chunking at night is what we usually do that time of year and have good success.

It’s very hard to find a weather window from November through February. You almost have to be ready to go on the spur of the moment.

If we are lucky what kind of air temp should we expect? Trying to decide what clothes to bring. The temperature probably won’t be that bad. Most of the rough seas that time of year are caused by hard north winds. Hopefully you won’t be fishing then.

But February in Costa Rica is very nice in my experience. Tuna peaks around May down there but you can get on great yellowfin bites in Feb too. Sssshhh, dont tell anyone, but I've heard that there are sailfish and marlin down there in Costa Rica too.

September and October are usually our best fishing months offshore, November gets pretty iffy pretty fast...

Years ago, we did tuna out of Venice in mid-February. It was cold as a rip but we got in em. Out on the hump or lump or whatever you call it. I also used to tuna fish out of Venice in February at the Midnight Lump and we would tear them up. Quit going when the "word got out" and the place started getting covered up with boats. They'd set up so close you'd break off 3 out of every 4 on some jack-leg's anchor line because they anchored so close. That was over 21 years ago... May be better or worse these days.

He runs tuna trips out of Venice. He told me February or March are the best months. After a day of tuna fishing, he can take you out for reds or trophy catfish as well. I'm tempted to take my boat down there for catfishing in March. Plenty of canals on the west side of the Mississippi River for me to fish. I went last March and the Gulf was glass smooth the two days I was there.
