They are really getting settled in and comfortable with us now. I've started some training and they learn very fast. Their temperament is a good mix of raw energy and a "we aim to please" attitude. For training they need to be worked with individually, of course. Both are different in personality but they are good pups.

Still on three meals per day and growing fast. They usually eat puppy chow once each day but the other meals are either shredded chicken, scrambled eggs, or what we call goulash (rice, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots and meat from chicken legs) that we make in the pressure cooker. They are already losing some of the puppy fuzz and getting shiny black fur down their backs. All of our dogs (four) are much healthier on the food we fix them here. With dog food $50 per bag, its actually cheaper to make it here anyway.

As for the homemade dog food, it's pretty simple. We take one of the big packs of chicken legs (usually about a dozen) and pressure cook them for 30 minutes and then pull the meat off the bone. In the broth leftover from cooking the chicken we add some water (to bring the total to 8 cups) and then 3 1/2 cups of of rice, a can of green beans (frozen or canned), carrots and two chopped sweet potatoes. Be sure there is NO onions or garlic added. Pressure cook for 6 minutes. Add the chicken and stir. A big pot will usually last around a week with our two adult dogs and two pups but the puppies do eat puppy chow once each day. I also scramble them eggs on occasion (we have plenty of eggs around here) so that stretches the goulash out some. It's really fairly quick and easy to make. Our dogs have been healthier and happier since we mostly got away from the commercial dog foods.

We took Skip for his first canoe trip today. I can't believe how good he was. He fell out of the boat in the first few minutes but then rode like an old pro for the rest of the trip. Both of these pups are gonna be great dogs. They train very quickly. Yesterday my wife and I took both puppies and our terrier mix to the lake. The pups did great.

I appreciate the recipe! I need to get my act together and get my pups on a natural diet. What's the portion size? Your dogs are living the good life! Skip had to learn the hard way, it sounds like. I can relate....

Hope it works out for you. Our dogs LOVE the stuff. The portion is the tough part because you really have to make sure it's reasonable. Our terrier mix and the two Aussie pups would eat the stuff until they popped. We feed the big dogs twice a day and the pups three times, so they get about a cup to a cup and a half per serving. Our adult dogs are only about 35 pounds. If your golden is grown, you may have to supplement the goulash with something else or you'll be doing a fair amount of cooking.

Hate to hear that y'all lost your old dog. IMHO, good dogs give a lot more than they take and are well worth the effort. Hope you are going to get another pup soon.

Got up at O' dark thirty this morning to let Skip and Remie out. Skip was in some kind of a good mood. LOL. I spent some quality time with them before we all went back to bed. That's the kind of joy they give.

Just finished feeding them shredded venison for lunch. My in-laws had an old deer roast that got buried in the freezer, so rather than let it go to waste we cooked it for the dogs. They are in the crate with the fan on for their daily nap. Good times.

The scene on the back porch will look like this in a few minutes. These two are best buddies for life.

Ya gotta fall out once to get the hang of it. Skip ain't no water dog, but he's not afraid of it either. I'm hoping to get Remie out for a solo trip soon, but she gets pretty car sick. She'll outgrow that at some point. For now, you better take a 5 gallon jug of water to wash the kennel out, cause you're gonna need it.

Everyday is an adventure and they are loving life! We are enjoying watching them grow up and spending time with them. It has been interesting to raise two puppies. They are absolute best friends so they are never alone, even when they aren't directly with us. In that way, it's actually easier to raise two than one.

Took the pups to the vet for their last round of shots today. They have nearly doubled their body weight in the last four weeks! Skip weighed in at 15 pounds last time, today he's at a hefty 25 pounds. LOL. Remie only weighed 22.8, but I think she lost about 5 pounds of drool on the way there. She still gets really green around the gills on a ride in the truck. Poor ole gal.

It's all that good food you feed them! I have a Jack Russel that got car sick when he was younger but eventually grew out of it. It did take him until he was about 6-7 years old though.

Thanks for asking about them. They are doing great, growing like weeds and 6 months old now. Both are very healthy and well adjusted, full of energy. We had Remie spayed on Friday, so she's recovering from that. Skip hasn't been weighed in a while, but he's got to be a good 35 pounds or so! We still feed them 3 times a day but may cut that to the normal 2 feedings of our adult dogs pretty soon. Both pups know the daily routine, know their names and come running when called. They act like saints when they have their collars on and only need an occasional tone to get their attention.

That's awesome! Skip is growing like a weed. I love their markings especially the white socks. You are going to have fun with those two over the years and please keep us updated

Getting Remie (The Rocket) recovered from spaying has been an adventure. She's doing great, but not having his sis around to rough house with has really upset Skip's apple cart. He has been out of sorts over it, so we let him inside the house a fair amount, play/visit with him extra, etc. It really illustrated to me how tight these two really are. They really are a matched set.

When we're in the basement, Skip always likes to look under the workbench. Snapped a pic of his shaggy butt the other day while he was under there, LOL. Check out the shine of his fur. They both glow in the sunlight. Good eats with plenty of fresh, raw eggs has them looking good.


Remie is almost healed from the surgery and they've been able to spend some time together the last couple of days. In the mean time until she's fully recovered, Skip has been learning to play ball. Ya gotta walk before you can run, but up close he can catch a very high percentage of balls tossed to him. He'll be a pro ball player before long.
