This is interesting. As expected, ask a room full of people what cartridge is best for killing deer and you get a room full of different answers. Same with gun I guess.
Oh, and get a Weatherby.

Jumping on this a little late but I do want to add this. Newer model rifles are basically what custom rifles were 30 years ago. The biggest difference is newer production rifles are taking advantage of newer parts and technology. Having said that, I guess you need to decide if your are a wood and blue steel kind of guy or if you are a composite and modern barrel kind of guy. If I was looking at newer rifles for your budget, the few that stand out are:
Seekins PH3
Fierce rogue twist
Tikka T3x
Sako (s20 if you can find one)
Bergara (I don’t have one but hear good things)
You also need to decide on your cartridge. That will come into play for sure!
Hunting brings out the worst in people.

The thoughts of spending $2K on a Winchester makes me nauseous.
You didn’t even mention the intended use or desired caliber.
Regardless of the answers to the previous questions- Winchester is not the answer When they were still made in New Haven, Winchester was turning out some good looking rifles that were also very accurate. I have 3 of the classic model rifles and they are all sub MOA guns. My Stainless Classic 300 Winchester Magnum is a .5 MOA gun or better with Berger VLD bullets. I hate the trigger on the post New Haven, FN produced M70 rifles. The barrels are also not the same quality and I think they use silly putty for a bedding material. If i need another Winchester, I'll be looking for older guns and pass on current production rifles. I have an older Winchester model 70 featherweight .280 that is an absolute tack driver. Curious as to why some recommend not getting a Kimber? I have a Kimber .308 I bought a few years ago and have been happy with it. Spotty quality control. Kimber has done a heck of a job marketing and designing an esthetically pleasing rifle that may or may not be a decent shooter.

They aren't pretty but find yourself a Steyr SBS Pro Hunter. I firmly believe you won't find a more accurate out of the box gun with factory ammo anywhere.

I had a .243 , tried several different rounds , couldn't get it to shoot worth a hoot . I found it a new home. Not a Kimber fan, there's better rifles for less $ IMO.

I appreciate the responses. The best shooting rifle I own is a 30-06 Weatherby Vanguard. I just wish it didn't weigh a hundred pounds! I do like taking the light Kimber when I am slipping around and hunting from the ground.

I’m blown away by the fact that number one they made ANY of the Model 700 classics in .300 Weatherby Magnum but that they made so many. Seems like they’d be everywhere but I’ve never seen one.
Correct answer is a Sako in the caliber you like. I’ve got an A2 .22-250, Forester .243 and .308, AV 270 and Finnbear .30-‘06. Also a Finnbear in .338 Win Mag. I’d buy another today if I found a Deluxe with the nicer stock and engraving on the bottom plate and trigger guard. Been looking for used Sako’s for YEARS and never seen one in person. Going to Tulsa show this year if I can find someone to go with me and surely there will be some there.
I cut off my Sako purchases at the AV line. My son has a 75 in .308 I bought off a member here but it’s stainless with a synthetic stock. It feels like a hooker, not a proper Sako. Great gun though. I think the 85’s are fine but I’ve heard of ejection issues with the case hitting the scope and falling back down

My 75 is a Hunter Stainless with a very nice French walnut stock.

My wife bought me one of those for a wedding present almost 27 years ago in 30.06. It was my go to gun for years. I took it to Africa last year and it performed flawlessly. Still one of my favorite rifles.

They cranked out a bunch in that caliber and it's a mystery to me as to why. On the other hand, the .308 had the lowest production run of all calibers and was the end of the series. I wasn't even looking but just happened upon the unfired gem that I picked up.
