I'm a 19 year carrier firefighter and the first thing I do, anywhere I go, is check the fire alarms. If they don't work, I call management or go get one. My hunting cabin is a 12x32 and I put escape windows in the loft, two smoke alarms, and a carbon monoxide detector. It's overkill, but I don't care.
