The 1,200 employees at the BFG plant in Tuscaloosa will be laid off over the next two years.
I don’t believe after this closure we will have any tire manufacturers left here in AL.
At one time there was 3. Uniroyal Opelika, Goodyear Gadsden, BFG Tuscaloosa are the three I’m aware of

Union plants across the country are going the way of the dinasours. Watch for more of it. Not worth the headache of having to deal with a union when you can offshore the work or move the work to a non-union friendly location.

Consolidating all BF Goodrich operations in Indiana, according to article. There are a total of 1450 +_ employees that will be affected. Sad to see as It has been a long time operation here in T-town.

Yesterday was 22yrs for me at the Tuscaloosa plant. They announced it to us today. This year operations will be the same. Starting in ‘27 will be ramping down as they shift things to Fort Wayne IN. ‘28 will be final
phases of permanent shutdown.

Yesterday was 22yrs for me at the Tuscaloosa plant. They announced it to us today. This year operations will be the same. Starting in ‘27 will be ramping down as they shift things to Fort Wayne IN. ‘28 will be final
phases of permanent shutdown. I truly hate this for you. I’ve been in those same shoes. How old are you? Old enough to retire by the time it closes? Do you have enough seniority to hold on till the end?

The Dunlop tire manufacturing facility in the Huntsville, Alabama area is actually operated by Goodyear (which owns the Dunlop brand). Located in the neighboring town of Harvest, this major production facility employs roughly 1,400 people and specializes in high-performance tires.

I’ve always heard legacy cost is one the biggest COST of running a large business Yes, unionized plants typically face significantly higher legacy and operating costs compared to non-union facilities. These costs add approximately 25% to 35% more to overall administrative budgets, largely driven by negotiated pension structures, post-retirement healthcare benefits, and structural inefficiencies. At same time it sucks for folks like superspike

Michelin plant in Dothan is still around. It is not union.

Well I guess all of the people I worked with here in Opelika that transferred to Tuscaloosa will now get their retirements. Good luck to you Super Spike and all of the rest of your fellow workers at BFG Tuscaloosa. Contrary to popular belief Michelin shut down the crown jewel BF Goodrich plant in Ardmore Oklahoma (non-union) a couple of years ago.

I really don’t want to be looking for a job amongst the other 1200 when they turn the lights off so I’ll be actively looking to see what’s out there. I won’t be making any knee jerk decisions right now but the wife and I will need to be talking about some decisions that’ll need to be made. To make it a double whammy, my wife works there too. She’s an engineer. So she’ll be looking as well. I agree about union plants. They’re just too costly to run. I withdrew from the USW at the plant a while back. They just fight for the wrong people but that’s a whole other thread. Regardless union or not we’re all in the same boat now.

I hate this for those of yall affected. I've always been a big BFG fan. However, I've read a bunch about how the QC on the tires have gone way down. Can't get them balanced, weird wear patterns, bad vibrations etc.

I’ll be thinking about you Sspike, 48 is too young to stop and I’m sure you can get something else lined up because everybody I deal with can’t get people to show up or work when they get there. Might not be the starting move money your accustomed too but will probably be the best thing for you in the future. Good luck my aldeer friend

Yes I agree there will be alot of happy employers soon because there is alot of good hard working people at our plant. Like others there is some bad ones too, but those of us that don’t mind getting up and trying to make a dollar will be fine.

New aluminum facility is staffing up in Bay Minette,AL. Looking for engineers, QC, operators, maintenance, safety etc. it’s a full plant stand up and staffing. Ads everywhere 6-8 weeks ago.
